Ross go three points clear after 8-2 success

Ross have moved three points clear in their bid to win the Herefords & Glos 1 title in the N4 Financial Solutions West of England and South League.

The south Herefordshire side won 8-2 at Newent 2nd and were helped by Hereford 2nd’s success over high-flying Lansdown 2nd.

Tom Walton, Adrian Williams, Sam Warner and man-of-the-match Nick Clarke each bagged a brace in Ross’ emphatic triumph.

A first-half brace from Williams put Ross on the road to victory as they opened up a 3-0 advantage before the interval.

Although Newent pulled back a couple of goals, Ross remained in control with the outstanding Clarke scorching down the wings.

Ross struck five times in the second half to put the seal on an important victory in their title push.

Hereford 2nd boosted their county rivals’ hopes after recording a 1-0 home win over Lansdown 2nd, who were joint-top at the start of the day.

Skipper Richard Brown notched the decisive goal for Hereford in the first half after Richard Edwards and Matt Thomas had combined in a short corner routine Steve Owen and Will Steel had started the game brightly for Hereford, while Edwards and Thomas were strong in defence.

Pete Preece made some good saves for the hosts, while Daiyle Door and Angus Light were thwarted by the Lansdown goalkeeper.

Hereford’s defence remained solid after the interval and they almost extended their advantage through Thomas and Brown.

Hereford came agonisingly close to a second goal in the dying minutes when a dangerous cross narrowly evaded Tom Clarke’s stick.

Goals from Matt Fox and Joe Smith could not stop Hereford 3rd from an 11-2 defeat at a strong Cleevillians 2nd in Herefords & Glos 2.

Cleevillians are pushing for promotion and were too powerful for Hereford after drafting in players from their first-team squad.

Hereford’s first team were beaten but not disgraced in a 5-0 defeat at table-topping Torbay in Premier Division 3.
