Hereford and Leominster win to aid relegation fight

Hereford secured a vital 3-2 win at Plymouth University in Premier Division 3 of the N4 Financial Solutions West of England and South Wales League.

Goals from Colin Amos, Ken Kerry and Richard Green gave Hereford the points which keeps them clear of the relegation zone.

With the bottom four teams likely to be relegated at the end of the season, Hereford knew the importance of the match at Plymouth.

Hereford fell behind after giving the ball away but struck back through an Amos penalty flick following a foul on Joe Thomas.

Kerry put Hereford 2-1 ahead before the break but Mark Allen was sin-binned early in the second period and Plymouth levelled from a short corner.

A mis-hit shot from Green restored Hereford’s advantage and, although Jon Mundy was yellow-carded, the visitors held firm.

A fine goalkeeping performance from Gavin Hughes helped Leominster to a welcome 3-2 success against East Devon.

Sam Morris opened the scoring and Dave Mumford fired in a cross from Dave Harvey to double the lead.

East Devon pulled a goal back but Nicko Evans’ fine finish restored the two-goal margin before the break.

The visitors pulled another goal back but Harvey set up Mumford again to seal the points.

Ross-on-Wye maintained their title challenge with a 5-0 home win over Leominster 2nd in Herefords & Glos 1.

The table-toppers made a flying start and a brace from Tom Walton and an Adrian Williams strike swept them into a 3-0 interval advantage.

Sam Warner bagged the south Herefordshire side’s fourth goal within seconds of the restart and he rounded off the scoring with his second.

Leominster worked hard throughout the derby but were comfortably beaten by their high-flying rivals.

Hereford 2nd enjoyed a successful weekend with wins over Stroud 2nd (3-1) and Lansdown 3rd (7-1), also in Herefords & Glos 1.

Hereford led just 1-0 at the break against a weakened Lansdown in a re-arranged match and then scored six goals in a rampant second-half display.

Andrew Griffiths saw plenty of the ball for Hereford but Lansdown defended strongly in the first half to frustrate the city side.

Steve Owen put Hereford ahead and they should have made it 2-0 before half time but Griffiths’ penalty flick was saved by the Lansdown goalkeeper.

Hereford overpowered Lansdown after the interval and Matt Thomas doubled their lead which sparked a goal avalanche.

Richard Wood, Richard Brown, Jonny Mundy and Ashley Moore also found the net for Hereford, while Owen bagged his second goal.

The previous day, a brace from Moore had helped Hereford 2nd to a 3-1 home win over Stroud 2nd.

Hereford were frustrated in the opening half when Brown struck the bar and Owen and Wood also went close to giving them the lead.

Brown eventually opened the scoring in the second period after a neat exchange between Joe Smith and Tom Clarke.

Smith created Hereford’s second goal, which was scored by Moore, and then Stroud reduced the deficit.

Moore sealed the points for Hereford when he collected a ball from Geoff Furneaux and ghosted past three Stroud defenders.

An inexperienced Hereford 3rd crashed to a 7-0 home defeat to Cirencester 4th in Herefords & Glos 2.
