Tompkins and Jones star as Hereford pick up point


GOALKEEPER Sam Jones and striker Emily Tompkins starred in Hereford’s 1-1 draw at Chippenham 2nd in the North Division of the West Clubs’ Women’s League.

Jones pulled off a host of excellent saves in the early stages to deny lowly Chippenham who started the match strongly.

Amy Wilkins, Jess Lambert and Claire Pritchard gradually took control of the midfield but Hereford failed to capitalise.

Tompkins broke away to put Hereford ahead, against the run of play, but Chippenham pressed hard in the second half.

Ali Preece, Sue Moody, Pippa Cardy and Deri Horan made vital tackles in Hereford’s defence before Chippenham broke through to rescue a point.

Karen Hackley’s second-half hat-trick helped promotion-chasing Leominster to an 8-3 victory at Bretforton 2nd in Severn Division 1.

A first-half brace from skipper Carolyne Gwynn and goals from Kate Holder and Lydia Monkley had given Leominster a 4-1 interval lead.

Leominster maintained their title-chase when Jackie Duggan struck after the break in addition to Hackley’s treble.

Jade Hodges had a good game in goal, while Anne Yarnold was solid in Leominster’s defence.

Bethan Watson was in outstanding form for Kington who romped to a 6-0 home win over Llan Llan 2nd in Division 2 of the South Wales Women’s League.

Jenny Layton notched a double for Kington, while Lucy Morgan, Becky Player, Emma Bryan and Ruth Alexander also found the net.

Amy Jenkins, Emma Turner, Bev Hyde and Ruth Smith also played well for Kington who led 2-0 at the breakand overpowered their rivals in the second half.

Player-of-the-matchch Rita Tomkins struck the winning goal in Presteigne’s 2-1 win over Montgomery at Welshpool.

Goals from Colin Amos, Emily Tompkins, Ken Kerry, Charlie Jones, Di Feely and Andy Rogers led Hereford to a 6-0 home win over Bath Civil Defence in the first round of the England Hockey Mixed Trophy.
