Ross 2nd played Winchcombe for the second week in a row in the N4 Financial Solutions West of England and South Wales League Hereford and Glos Division 2.
Though Ross had managed a 4-3 win against their perennial bogey opponents in the first clash, Winchcombe resumed normal service with a 5-3 victory.
Playing at their home ground in Monmouth on a pitch just deemed playable, Ross found it more difficult than Winchcombe to come to terms with uneven bounce of the ball.
Pinned in their own half they went 2-0 down in the first 15 minutes.
Just before the break Ross got into the game when Alex Black went on a run and Richard Harbottle was only prevented from converting his cross by an illegal foot.
Adam Couch blasted in from the resulting short corner.
Warming to the task in the second half, Ross levelled the scores when Phil Evans was released by a slick passing movement to send a rasping shot underneath the goalkeeper.
But soon afterwards the defence subsided to leave keeper Seb Sullivan helpless to prevent a Winchcombe shot making it 2-3.
Going in search of another equaliser, Ross conceded again before Chris Chalk gave them some hope with a well worked goal.
Winchcombe, however, made the points safe with a fifth goal.
❑ Hereford 3rd were another team to beat the elements in the same division and returned from Cirencester with a welcome 4-1 win against their third-placed counterparts.
Trailing to a goal on 25 minutes, Hereford replied before half-time with a reverse-stick shot scored by Alex Miller.
Within 30 seconds of the restart, Matt Biggs gave the visitors a 2-1 lead from a short corner.
Hereford exerted their authority in the remainder of the game with both Miller and Biggs notching their second goals, Miller following a short corner and Biggs giving the scoreline an emphatic look from open play.
