Feely hits target but Hereford ladies suffer rare loss

Hereford were unable to carry the momentum of their previous week’s win against West Clubs Women’s League North Division leaders City of Bath into another home success.

The hosts started slowly and Cheltenham profited from a penalty-flick awarded for a foot on the line midway through the first half and led 1-0 at the break.

Shaking themselves out of a little complacency which may have been creeping in, second-placed Hereford threatened to re-ignite their form when Di Feely tucked away a cross to level matters.

But it was Cheltenham who launched a period of sustained pressure after that and penned the home team in their own half.

Towards the end of the match a good goal gave the visitors a 2-1 victory.

Despite playing with only 10 players for the whole game, Severn Division 1 leaders Leominster recorded a comfortable 5-2 win at Wootton Bassett.

The home team started strongly and took the lead but Karen Hackley, returning from injury, equalised and then made a fine interception to set up Debbie Jones to make it 2-1.

After a glaring miss by Hackley, Liz Ranft gave the visitors a two-goal cushion at half time with a good finish from a short corner.

Bassett rallied to 3-2 before Leominster re-asserted their authority when Ranft received from Hackley to register her second goal from the corner of the “D”.

Kate Holder completed the scoring following a short corner.

Hereford 2nd’s winning run came to an end at second-placed Blockley.

The shock of conceding an early goal forced Hereford to regroup and strive for a better shape in defence.

On the back foot for most of the first half, determined defending and well-timed tackles prevented the Cotswolds outfit from extending their lead until the stroke of half time.

Although Hereford enjoyed more possession in the second half, Blockley made it 3-0 with almost the last move of the game when they scored from a penalty corner.

Colwall & Malvern lost 3-2 at home to fellow strugglers Bretforton 2nd.

Division 2 leaders Ross-on-Wye were without a fixture this weekend.

Kington Ladies were also without a game in the South Wales Hockey League.
