Hereford’S inconsistent form continues in Premier Division 3 of the N4 Financial Solutions England and South Wales League.
Entertaining fourth-placed West Wilts and taking an early lead suggested there was a chance of building on last week’s 8-0 drubbing of East Devon.
Joe Thomas went off on a good run to score a fine individual goal in the fifth minute to raise hopes but West Wilts were back on terms from a short corner 15 minutes later.
Poor marking let the visitors in for a second on 25 minutes and, despite exerting some spells of pressure during the rest of the game, Hereford were unable find a cutting edge to prevent a 2-1 defeat.
Leominster travelled to Cardiff to play Cardiff & UWIC 2nd but owing to confusion over the venue the fixture did not take place.
Persistence in front of goal by five-goal Adrian Williams enabled Ross-on-Wye to stay a point clear at the top of Hereford & Gloucester Division 1 with a facile 8-0 triumph against Sherborne.
Williams scored a hat-trick in the first half and fellow attacker Phil Evans weighed in with one goal to ease Ross into a 4-0 lead by the break, with keeper Andy Ridgway a virtual spectator at the other end.
Midfielder Sam Warner joined in the scoring in the second half and, after Williams had notched his fourth with an instant shot from the “D”, he combined neatly with Warner to claim his fifth goal of the game.
Nick Clarke claimed the eighth in the closing stages.
With Duncan Tindle and Matt Fox promoted from the third team, Hereford 2nd went down 2-1 at Cirencester.
Pinned back in the early stages, defenders Fox, Nigel and Jonny Mundy and veteran Percy Steele frustrated Cirencester before conceding a goal near the interval.
When Cirencester made it 2-0 with a goal through the right midfield Hereford responded by sending Jonny Mundy up into midfield.
A free-hit just outside the 25-yard line allowed Mundy to move into the “D” and have a shot which was by deflected by Tim Miller into the top of goal.
But despite concerted attacking, the visitors were unable to find an equaliser.
Leominster 2nd lost 4-2 at home to Stroud 2nd.
In Division 2, Ross 2nd let their bogey opponents Winchcombe back into the game at Cheltenham after cruising into 2-0 and 3-1 leads with a hat-trick by Tom McLuskie.
Poor defending enabled Winchcombe to draw level but Alex Black came on for Chris Bargh with five minutes left and steered a winner into the home net to make it 4-3 to Ross.
