Sophie Price wins Ross Golf Club's Blake Cup at just 13 years of age

THIRTEEN-year-old Sophie Price belied her age with a mature performance to win the Ross GC Gordon Blake Cup which has been contested since 1908.

The rules of the competition dictated that Price had to forego her junior handicap of 43 and play off 36 but the teenager shrugged off that setback to shoot a remarkable seven-under-par round to record a winning score of 66 nett.

Price, who has been playing golf since she was six, chipped in for a par four on the 18th and sank a long putt on the par-five eighth for a birdie.

Sheila Curtis shot a 72 nett to finish runner-up in the 66-strong field with Julia Wilde, also with a 72, third on countback.

Over-70s ladies’ gross competition: 1 Jean Ovens 94 gross.

Ross Seniors’ scratch team for over-55s reached the third round of the Gloucestershire Seniors Salver with a 2-1 home win over Knowle GC. Doug Duncanson and Brian Prosser (1 up) and Gwynne Morgan and Colin Bennion (2 and 1) won their matches while Clarkson Barclay and Tim Rigden suffered and 2 and 1 loss.

Ross have beaten Newport GC in the 29th staging of the competition to retain the annual DragonTrophy.

In the away match at Rogerstone, Neil Lancett and Richard Brough (1 up), Gwynne Morgan and Dave Hart (7 and 5) and Tim Wyatt and Dave Gardner (4 and 3) secured wins to complete a 3-3 draw, following on from a Ross win in the home leg earlier in the season.

Ò Hereford Lions Club’s annual charity golf tournament was won by a team of MOD policemen, Mark Sandford, Dex Murgatroyd, Stuart Humphries and Eamonn Croft. Their score of 103 placed them at the head of the 103 teams taking part.

The ladies’ prize was won by Vicky Howells, Sharon Helps, Helen Green and Heather Burley who completed a competition hat-trick.
