Herefordshire enjoy success against Brecon & Radnor at Builth Wells

HEREFORDSHIRE enjoyed a 10½-4½ win when they played Brecon & Radnor at Builth Wells GC.

The county side made a great start when they won all of the morning foursomes and followed up with a 5½-4½ success in the afternoon singles.

Foursomes: Alex Allan and Mark Lewis won 1 up, Ross Moore and James Morgan won 4 and 2, Jonathan Devereux and James Cooke won 7 and 6, Ben Fisher and Guy Haines won 2 up, Phil Harrison and Neil Crockett won 4 and 2.

Singles: Jonathan Devereux lost 6 and 5, Mark Lewis lost 6 and 5, Alex Allan won 6 and 5, James Cooke won 7 and 6, Ross Moore lost 5 and 4, James Morgan halved, Phil Harrison won 4 and 2, Ben Fisher won 5 and 4, Neil Crockett lost 2 and 1, Guy Haines won 5 and 4.

The senior section captain’s day was supported by 51 members with £280 raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Pauline Newton, Lynn Relph, Debbie Griffiths and Margaret Smale are the leading contenders for the ladies section’s club championship after the first round.

Cradoc Seniors secured a half in a home match against a strong Brecon team.

The winning pairs were Graham Crawford and Bill Sisley (6 and 5), Roger Thornhill and David Holton (6 and 4), Dave Mathews and Ron Rowsell (1 up) with team captain Jack Massey and Noel Rees gaining the half.

Cradoc Hallets were beaten 2½-1½ at Radyr where the winning pair were Malcolm Prosser and Aled Jones (3 and 2) with Lyn Prichard and Bryan Jones securing the half.

The Hallets halved their match at St Marys 2-2 where the winning pairs were Bryan Jones and Lyn Prichard (4 and 3) and Mike Lynch and Anthony O’Connor (2 up).

Of three Cradoc teams in the quarterfinals of the South Wales Seniors Classic at Morriston GC, only the ‘A’ team captained by Anthony Payne managed a victory over St Athan ‘B’ with the victory secured by Adrian Pride and David James on a play-off at the 19th hole.
