Burghill Valley's Richard Lloyd is Herefordshire champion

RICHARD Lloyd is the new Herefordshire county champion.

The Burghill Valley player fired rounds of 74 and 73 to take the title at Ross-on-Wye GC, winning by five strokes from the home club’s James Morgan who shot a 78 and a 74.

Morgan gained second place on the back six in the second round from Belmont’s James Roach who also shot 78 and 74.

Burghill Valley achieved a double of the top prizes when the nett prize went to Paul Moses (153-12-141) who won by three strokes from club-mate Neil Crockett (158-14-144) with another Burghill Valley player, B Fisher (157-12-145) in third.

Lloyd (147) and Moses (153) linked up with Guy Haines (154) to bring a third prize, the best team over 36 holes gross, to Burghill Valley.

Neil Greening (Herefordshire GC), with 75, and R Beaumont (Leominster), with 72, were the winners of the best morning and afternoon gross rounds respectively.

The morning and afternoon nett prizes were carried off by D Tedstone (Burghill Valley), 85-12-73, and Nick Crum (Kington), 79-9-70.

Paul Fisher (Herefordshire GC) also had a day to remember when he holed in one at the long par-three ninth.

Three of the top four places in the county seniors’ championship, held at Burghill Valley GC, went to Herefordshire GC players with John Lucas shooting 78 to take the top prize from Brian Prosser, of Ross-on-Wye (80), Keith Williams (81) and Tommy Hughes (82).

Lucas, Williams and Hughes’ efforts won them the team prize.

The nett champion was Robert Goodall of Burghill Valley (92-24-68), followed by club-mate Steve Flack (87-17-70), Phil Manns of Herefordshire GC (84-12-72) and Alan Hamilton of Kington (83-10-73).

Holders Ross Seniors moved through to the second round of the North Gloucestershire Scratch Salver with a victory over Cleeve Cloud GC.

Winning pairs were Gwynne Morgan and Colin Bennion (7 and 5) and Clarkson Barclay and Tim Rigden (two up) while Doug Duncanson and Brian Prosser halved. Ross beat Enville GC 3½-2½ in a friendly with wins for Colin Bennion and Kevin D’Lonra (one up), Lee Cartwright and Chris Merriman (one up) and Robert Bodoano and James Hay (4 and 3), while team captain Terry Jarrett and club vice-captain Phil Wilson halved.

q Cradoc GC, Famous Grouse foursomes competition: 1 Malcolm Prosser and Chris Alford 70, 2 Colin Jones and Tom Price 70, 3 Andrew Prichard and Mike Lynch 70.

Cradoc Seniors beat Kington Seniors 6½-1½ with wins for captain Jack Massey and Mike Mellors (3 and 2), Rick Jones and Graham Chamberlain (one up), Colin Rosser and Dave Matthews (one up), Derek Brown and Ken Goodley (4 and 2), Bob Hughes and Roy Alp (4 and 3), and Ron Rowsell and Bill Sisley (7 and 5) while John Nancarrow and Arthur Hughes halved.

Cradoc Wayfarers won 3-2 at Virginia Park GC where the winning pairs were Roger Jones and Tom Astle (3 and 2) and Clive Pearson and Nick Powell (6 and 5), with Les Gwynne and John James and Gary Jenkins and David James halved.
