Gordon Johannson wins Ivor Cooper Memorial Trophy to boost St Michael's Hospice

THIS year’s Ivor Cooper Memorial Golf Day at Burghill Valley GC raised £800 for St Michael’s Hospice.

Players from Milton Keynes, South Wales, Shropshire and Worcestershire came to take part in the event which featured 54 golfers in 18 teams of three.

The competition was a Stableford singles competition with a team prize where the best two of three scored.

Home player Gorden Johannson took the singles prize with 41 points, followed home club-mate Nathan Brant, with 39.

South Monmouthshire GC player Steven Brown, 38, was third.

The team prize went to the home trio of Derick Ling, Nigel Williams and Dr Bill Harris.

Dr Harris handed over a cheque to hospice nursing assistant Angie Williams who, with her husband Tom, organised the event.

Prizes were presented by Ivor Cooper’s widow Eileen.

South Herefordshire ‘A’ beat Tewkesbury Park 3½-2½ in the North Gloucestershire Foursomes League. South Herefordshire ‘B’ drew 3-3 with their Tewkesbury Park counterparts in the same competition.

Ladies’ section, monthly medal: 1 Erica Warr, 2 Jill Wargen, 3 Sally Tudsbury Turner.

Wins for the pairings of Anita Leaver and Lesley Colquhoun and Margaret Smale and Val Bland and a half for Lynn Relphs and Chris Rivers brought South Herefordshire Ladies a 2½-½ success against Sherdons GC in the Severn Vale Challenge.

q Ross GC, Traders’ Cup: 1 Simon Davies 86-16-70, 2 James Hay 81-11-70, 3 Gareth Webb 81-11-70.

Ross ‘A’ beat Naunton Downs 3½-2½ in the NGFL with wins for Neil Lancett and Tony Howells (3 and 2), Dave Gardner and Mitchell Lawrence (7 and 5) and Leighton Walker and Jake Howells (4 and 2) with Keith Crawford and Gwynne Morgan halving their match.

Ross ‘B’ beat Naunton Down in a friendly match and regained the Dragon Trophy with a 6-0 success against Newport Ross Seniors were beaten 5-3 by Monmouth Seniors.

q Cradoc GC’s Terry Eckley scored his first hole-in-one in more than 30 years when he aced the par three third.

Texas Scramble Open: 1 Adrian Lewis, Carl Thomas, Ken Evans and Russell Arnold (Neath) 57 nett, 2 Paul Morgan, Darren Colwill (Caerphilly GC), Ian Stewart (Dewstow) and Steve Davis (The Monmouthshire) 57.8 nett, Cradoc ‘B’ won 2 and 1 at Trefloyne in the South Wales Seniors Classic Bowl. Team captain Les Gwynne and Brian Nelson won 2 and 1 while Chris Williams and Clive Pearson won one up.

Seniors’ monthly medal: 1 Ken Goodley 90-18-72, 2 Tony James 85-12-73, 3 John Nancarrow 86-12-74.

Midweek Stableford competition: 1 Garry Jenkins 39 pts, 2 Jeffrey Price 36, 3 Owen Phillips 35.

Cradoc Wayfarers were beaten 3-2 by Llantrisant despite successes for Tony Payne and Tom Price (3 and 2) and Sam Lloyd and Drew Lloyd (2 up).

Cradoc hosted the MWGA four-ball better-ball competition which was contested by 89 pairs: 1 Ian Crank and Aled Jones 63, 2 L Jones and B Lynch 64, 3 B Murray and W O’Brian 65.

q Shropshire and Herefordshire UGC Seniors have suffered a disappointing start to the season with three defeats in 10 days, going down against Staffordshire 10-8, Lancashire 9½-8½ and Warwickshire 10½-7½.
