HEREFORDSHIRE Golf Club’s Ladies Scratch team has won promotion to Division One of the Midlands Inter-County Ladies’ Scratch League.

This is a second promotion in three years for Herefordshire’s team who, after playing in Division Three for many years, gained promotion to Division Two in 2009.

The team of five played two home and two away matches, taking on Coventry Finham, Maxstoke Park, Stratford-upon- Avon and Ladbrook Park on their way to topping Division Two and promotion.

Eight players took part during the season – Karen Darby, Emma Harris, Jo Hawes, Geraldene Kelly, Sue Mawby, Amy Morgan, Jan Preece and Ann Wheatstone.

“It is a tremendous achievement for the club to be promoted to Division One in what is a very competitive league,” said team captain Sue Mawby.

“The clubs we will be playing in 2012, Kidderminster, Droitwich, Nuneaton and Enville, all have very strong scratch teams so I am sure that we will have some tough matches but we are looking forward to the challenge.”

The league began in 1988 and is open to clubs from Derbyshire, Herefordshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

There are currently 35 clubs playing in seven divisions.

Two young Burghill Valley players have enjoyed top-three finishes at the inaugural Midlands Golf Tournament at Little Aston GC in Staffordshire.

Chris Makin shot 78 in the 18-hole medal competition to win the under-16 section while Morgan Radziejowski’s 104 earned him a share of third place in the under-10 competition.

Makin was also part of the Shropshire and Herefordshire team which beat Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire to win the team competition.
