In-form Halpern takes top spot with 51-point return

DAVID Halpern shot a remarkable 51 points to win a seniors’ stableford competition at The Herefordshire GC.

David Knowles was second, with 44 points, while Norman Sockett finished third after a 43-point haul.

David James has been elected as the new captain of Cradoc GC at a well-attended annual meeting.

James takes over from outgoing captain Paul Exton who presented a cheque for £1,500 to Brecon War Memorial Hospital.

Tony Evans was elected club vice-captain, while Fiona Jones is the new ladies’ captain and Nicholas Morrell was re-elected club treasurer.

Exton reported a successful year in which Cradoc Ladies won the Welsh team championship and improvements were made to the clubhouse.

A Belmont team of Richard Hemming, Ray Snead, Nick Hemming and Jamie Roach won the Shropshire & Hereford PGA Alliance at Burghill Valley GC.

The quartet won the team event by five shots and pro Richard Hemming also triumphed in the pro competition after carding 35 points.

Hemming dropped four shots in the first three holes but played the back-nine in three under par. Snead was fourth in the amateur event.

Roach, James Tutty, Nick Hemming and Peter Wilcox, with 57.6, won Belmont’s Texas Scramble. Snead, Elwyn Hamer, Peter James and Andy Lambert were second after shooting 58.2.

John Alexander, with 36 points, took the top prize in the 0-14 low handicap section of a seniors’ away day at Wyre Forest GC.

Percy Bristow (34 points) finished in second spot and Alex Quinn (32 points), third.

Phil Skyrme shot 39 points to top the 15-28 high handicap section.

Ray Ingram was second on a countback from third-placed Des Samuel after both players carded 38 points.

Phil Skyrme also tasted success in winning the Brian Matthews Memorial Trophy.

Alexander carried off the Winter League title from second-placed Samuel.

Sam Loxton won the Hurcombe Plate and Don Filer was the runner-up.

Don Barrington, John Freeman, Les Herbert and Bill Lewis triumphed in Burghill Valley’s Senior Grand Prix.

The home quartet carded a winning haul of 90 points, while Cardiff’s Patrick Gray, Richard Harris, Alun Jones and Nigel Jones were second, with 88 points.

Kington’s Dave Baxendale, Ron David-Jones, Glyn Wictome and John Priday finished third after shooting 87 points.

Ben Fisher claimed first place in the club’s Division 1 Men’s Medal after carding 69-8-77.

Frank Bowen (73-10-83) was second and third-place went to Alan Strain (74-12-86). Dave Cox (77) won the gross prize.

Jamie Porter (72-18-90) headed the Division 2 Medal, while Keith Winsor (75-19-94) was second on a countback from Bill Toman (75-26-101). Eddy Powell also played well and took the best gross after scoring 90.

Andrew Wilmott (83-17-66) took top prize in the March Medal at Kington GC.

George Smith (76-9-67) won Division 1 from second-placed Alan Williams (72-3-69).

Murray Mackintosh (79-10-69) triumphed in Division 2, while Tracy Sandford (87-15-72) finished in second spot.

Marcel Veillet (89-17-72) won Division 3 from second-placed Geoff Smith (94-20-74).

D Whyke, M Richards and V Weaver carded 53 points to win Kington Seniors’ Texas scramble.

RD Jones, R Lee and T Inskip (52 points) were second and third place went to M Harley, D Haley and T Wheight (49 points).

Neil Winter carried off the Barnfield Trophy - the first major trophy of 2010 at Ross-on-Wye GC.

Winter fired an impressive 43 stableford points and has also booked his place at the club’s presentation event in September.

Stephen Bartholomew, with 41 points, was the runner-up and has shown good form throughout the winter. Nick Swan, who also shot 41 points, won Handicap Division 1.

Robert Bodoano, Colin Burchell and Dave Thrower fired 134 points to secure top spot in Ross Seniors’ 16-hole Yellow Ball competition.

Nick Swan, John Church-Jones and Bill Castle, with 132 points, were the runners-up. David Every, Brian Clouder and David Rees finished third after firing 129 points.

Colin Kerfoot shot 83-16-67 to achieve first place in Division 1 of the March Medal at Leominster GC. Dave McGrath (85-15-70) was second, while Rob Leney (90-17-73) finished third.

Jonathan Small (95-28-67) won Division 2 from second-placed Charlie Tune (99-27-72) and third-placed Derek Phillips (96-24-72).

Kerfoot (77-14-63) topped the Hall of Fame, while John Callow (90-24-66) was second and Gerald Cooke (79-12-67), third.

Beth Morris clinched Minster Sports College Golf Society’s March Mulligan Medal.

Her excellent nett 16 held off the challenge from Russell Legge and Connor Diggens who each shot a nett 17.

Sam Finney, Jack Green and Ellie Lines were the other divisional winners.
