ADRIAN Griffiths and his son Ben have won Leominster’s Winter League Marden Trophy.
They are the second father-and-son to have carried off the title after Tony and Rob Pugh’s success in 1998.
The Griffiths’ clinched the trophy with victory in the 20th hole of a close-fought final against junior members Ben Clarke and Dan Davies.
The Griffiths duo had fought their way through the league to qualify for the last 16 and knocked out Kevin Green Paul Creasey in the first round.
They then overcame Tony Wathen and Dave Pugh before defeating Wayne Barton and Steve Olive in the quarter-finals.
The Griffiths’ booked their place in the final with a semi-final victory over Greg Bridges and Mark Lane.
Clarke and Davies had progressed to the final after beating Rob Brotherwood and Tony Chadwick, Tim Suff and Paul Hitching, and Kevin and Alan Room.
Graham Davies scored 42 points to take first place in the Herefordshire GC’s Seniors’ Stableford competition.
Norman Haynes was second with 38 points and Bryan Matthews secured third spot with 37 points.
Herefordshire Seniors continued their excellent form with a seven matches to one home win over Worfield.
They followed up that success with a 4½ matches to 3½ win at Monmouth.
Shaun Chambers and James Marsh won divisions one and two respectively in the NAPGC Men’s Championship of England qualifier at Hereford Municipal GC.
However, the duo will not go forward to the regional finals because they had not played in a pre-requisite club competition since January.
Chambers also returned the best score of the day with 39 points, beating Graham Gammage, the Division 3 winner, on a countback.
Gammage progresses as the overall winner and the adjusted results mean he will be joined in the regional finals by Division 1 qualifier Phil Green, John Davis (Division 2), Colin Morgan (Division 3), and Ean Payne (Division 4).
Hereford Municipal lost their home handicap league match against Worfield by four games to two after three of the matches were decided on the 17th hole.
Rob Metcalfe 2nd and Wyndham Evans clinched Kington’s Ravenhill Cup with a nett 64.
Alex Corfield and Kevin Corfield also hit a nett 64 but finished second after a countback on the back nine.
Rob Metcalfe and Dave Bradley secured third spot with a nett 65.
Andy Edey played well to win the Kington Seniors’ away day at Little Lakes Golf Club.
Edey topped the leader board with 37 points, while second place went to Dave Haley and Glyn Wictome was third with 31 points.
Haley, Wictome and Pip Ryde clinched the team prize with a winning total of 76 points.
Ron Davies won Division 1 in the first medal of the Seniors’ summer season after firing 80-11-69.
Mike Richards was second with 84-13-71 and third place went to Edey with 81-10-71.
Phil Gould topped Division 2 with 88-21-67, while George Farr (99-27-72) was second and Dave Mains (104-28-76), third.
Kington’s handicap league team have started the season with a four games to two home win over Telford Golf Club.
Luke Jones was the overall winner of Kingstone High School Golf Society’s April Stableford at Brampton.
Stewart Thomson matched Jones’ 20-point tally over the nine holes but lost out on a countback.
Dave Cook won Division 2 on a countback from Bill Cockman after both players carded 19 points.
Dan Hearn finished in third spot with 18 points.
James Johnson was the Division 3 winner with 18 points, while Tom Minton topped the Novice section with 10 points.
Gareth Williams was the victor in the April monthly medal in the Kingstone High School Golf Society.
Williams (48-20-28) managed to pip in-form Richard Ingram (37-9-28) on a countback in windy and cold conditions.
Ingram had to settle for the Division 1 honours, while Bill Cockman (42-12-30) pipped Dan Hearn (41-11-30) in Division 2 and Taylor Skidmore (58-27-31) won Division 3.
Cradoc achieved two wins in the preliminary round of the 2008 South Wales Seniors Classic.
Their B team recorded a 2.5 matches to 0.5 home win over Clyne B.
Clive Price and Chris Williams got Cradoc off to a good start by winning 5&3 and then Allan Mason and David Eddon won 4&3.
Cradoc’s third pairing of Graham Harris and John Nancarrow halved their match.
Cradoc’s A team have also qualified for the Classic Cup after an away win over Neath A in warm and windy conditions.
Len Amos, George Bissell and Ken Cotterell won a new St George’s Day competition at Burghill Valley Seniors.
Teams had to consist of an ex-soldier, an ex-RAF man and a civilian.
The winning trio carded 96 stableford points, while John Tyler and Roy Green were second with an adjusted score of 90 points.
Chris Furber, Guy Amos and Peter Haddock took third spot with 87 points.
Phillip Sayce totalled 35 points to win the Three Counties Golf Society’s second event of the season at The Kendleshire Golf Club in Bristol.
Nigel Winney was second with 34 points, while Phil Collins finished third.
Sayce also won a prize for the longest drive with Chris Cole collecting the nearest-the-pin award.
The society raised £140 for the Nick Craddock round Britain charity boat trip in aid of the RNLI on a nearest-the-pin hole won by Collins.
Jim Harvey carried off the Belmont Trophy at Belmont Golf Club with 39 points.
Ian Gardiner was second with 38 points on a countback from third-placed Luke Morris and fourth-placed Paul Bufton.
Paul Gosling won the 0-14 handicap section of the seniors’ medal after shooting 82-10-72.
Second-place went to Ian Caves who finished with 84-10-74.
Don Filer took top spot in the 15-28 section after carding 82-19-63, while Des Samuel (90-16-74) was the runner-up.
Ross A, under the leadership of new skipper Andrew Crispe, secured a 3-3 tie at Worcester Golf and Country Club in their opening match of the Worcestershire A Team League season. Ross C suffered a 5 points to 1 defeat against Monmouth in their first friendly and club captain Dave Griffiths skippered Ross to a 4-2 home win over Newport. Ross seniors’ captain Tim Ridgen led his team to an 8-0 home whitewash over Worcestershire Golf Club seniors in a friendly.
Alex Shave won the April Stableford competition with a 40-point return at Brockington Hall.
Brian Jones was the runner-up with 35 points, while Ivor Ballard was third with 31 points.
Jones triumphed in the April Medal with a return of 88-19-69 nett, while David Lloyd (87-16-71) was second and third-place went to Jim Stocker (95-21-74).
Keith Shaw triumphed in the Seniors’ Championship medal with a return of 92-25-67.
Shave (88-19-69) was second, while third-place was secured by Peter Boughey (88-18-70).
Brockington Seniors achieved a 5-1 friendly win at Church Stretton.
