Cup success for Powell and King after outstanding score

AN outstanding stableford better-ball score of 46 points earned victory for Derek Powell and Colin King in Herefordshire Seniors’ Harry Parkes Cup competition.

Mike Morgan and Graham Davies took second place from Tim Townsend and Cec Morgan after a card countback. Both pairs had scored 42 points.

A total of £385 was raised for the County Air Ambulance at the captain’s drive-in.

In the competition, itself, Dave Masefield finished top with 43 points, while Cyril Jones was second and Rob Vaughan, third.

Pete James, Sean Pockett, Matt Tweddell and Ryan Jones won the Belmont Texas Scramble with 56.9 points.

Roger Woolley, Wref Digings, Terry Thomas and Geoff Foster finished second with 59.6.

Belmont recorded a 5-1 win over Sapey in the Handicap League.

Geoff Foster carded 38 points to win the 0-14 handicap section of a seniors’ away day at Bransford.

Mike Ingham was second with 32 points, while Phil Skyrme was third, also with 32 points.

George Cozens totalled 40 points to finish top of the 15-28 section.

John Driscoll was second with 35 points, while Colin Rowan was third with 32 points.

Stan Thornton produced a winning score of 42 points to finish top of Division 1 in Kington’s last Winter League event.

Andy Edey was second with 41 points, while third spot went to Frank Goodwin with 39 points.

Eddie Winstone took first place in Division 2 with 38 points, while Phil Gould (37) was second and Dick Lee (36) finished third.

The seniors continued their promising start to the inter-club match season with a 6-1 home win over Brecon.

Kington suffered an early exit from the Mail on Sunday competition after losing 4½-½ at St Giles (neat Newtown).

The half was gained by last year’s Herefordshire County Junior Champion, Ross Moore.

Moore showed plenty of determination to achieve the half because he trailed by four holes with five remaining.

Dave Botwood fired 81-12-69 to win the 0-12 handicap section in the April monthly medal at Leominster.

Joss Ingram took second place with 82-9-73, while Gerald Cooke was third with 87-12-75.

Terry Morgan triumphed in the 13-18 section with 85-13-72.

Allan Hall was second with 86-14-72, while Paul Hitching was third with 91-18-73.

Stephen Usher was the winner of the 19-28 section with 92-26-70.

Second place went to Charlie Tune who carded 90-20-70.

Terry Savage scored 41 points to win the first round of the seniors’ 2008 Layton Cup at Ross.

The 18-hole stableford event was a hotly-contested affair with five players each scoring 40 points.

Ray Causon secured the runners-up spot, while Dave Every finished in third place.

The other three players with 40 points were newcomer Andrew Stow, David Whitehead and Peter Carton-Kelly.

A total of 94 members took part in the opening round of the six-round event.

Ross B recorded a 4.5 points to 1.5 points home win over Droitwich in a friendly match.

Winning scores were achieved by Daniel Gear and Geoff Robinson 3&1, Derek Hale and Dave Ruff 5&3, Stan Beale and Bill Day 4&2 and Roger Beaman and Mike Harris 7&6.

Cradoc’s assistant professional, Will Dowd, teamed up with greenkeeper Stuart Ross to win a Texas Scramble.

The duo won the competition, which attracted a field of 110 members, with a gross 65, nett 63.6.

Ian Gwillym and Stuart Harries secured second spot with a gross 72, nett 64.4.

Club professional Richard Davies and new club captain Alan Pooley were third with a gross 67, nett 65.

Rhys Annett carded 41 points to win the club’s Lombard Trophy Qualifier.

John Reardon was second with 38 points, while Adrian Pride was third with 37.

Bill Waygood scored 25 points over nine holes to win the Hereford Municipal Seniors’ annual three club competition.

Waygood decided on a three wood, seven iron and a putter and managed to stay clear of the bunkers.

Tony Mills and Mike Steele finished with 22 points each.

Peter Robinson romped home with a nett 29.5 to win the March Medal.

Robinson beat Keith Strangwood, who had a nett 31.5, while Waygood notched third place with a nett 32.

Brian Vaughan narrowly beat Dereck Blundell, by one shot, to take top spot in Division 1 of the Burghill Valley seniors’ April Medal.

Vaughan fired a winning 82-14-68, while Blundell hit 90-21-69 and Tony Edwards with third with 91-21-70.

Gerry Saunders achieved the lowest gross with 88 strokes.

Harry Thornley took the honours in Division 2 with a nett 75, while Les Amos and Barry Watkins won countbacks to finish second and third, respectively.

Division 2 result: 1 Harry Thornley 100-25-75, 2 Les Amos 102-26-76, 3 Barry Watkins 104-28-76.
