OLIVER Farr thanked the support he received in his younger years after being named Wales Golf Touring Professional of the Year.

The 30-year-old, former Welsh international from Hereford picked up the award at the Wales Golf Awards ceremony recently.

It followed a season when Farr finished seventh on the Challenge Tour, including a win at the Foshan Open, regaining his place on the European Tour after a gap of one year.

“I was in a bit of a hangover period at the start of last year, sorted myself out midway through the season, changed a few things mentally and started playing some great golf,” said Farr.

“Luckily the win came at the end of the season and to win again was great, in golf you don’t win that much and the bonus of getting my card back was extra.

“To win this award today is good as well because there are so many great players from Wales out on Tour and who have won this before so it is a huge honour.

“I refer back to amateur days all the time. I always say that if I did not have the Welsh golf experience I do not think I would be in this position as a touring pro.

“I would be a professional, but not a touring professional. Wales Golf helped me become a tournament player and to have that for five years under the influence of Nigel Edwards was fantastic for me.

“I cannot thank them enough for what they did for me in those five or six years.”

Meanwhile Farr will be holding a short game clinic for junior members at Burghill Golf Club on May 4 from 4.30pm.
