ROSS Golf Club have teamed up with Ashfield Park Primary School to run a ‘School of Golf’ in an attempt to increase participation in the sport at grass roots level.

Head professional Tim Hall, golf professional Oli Leett and former pupil James Dobbs have been running the after school activity of ‘Tri-Golf’ with support from head teacher Geraint Mills.

Sixty pupils from years five and six have been taking part in the ‘mini’ version of golf.

It involves the use of adapted equipment and a variety of games designed to provide an enjoyable introduction to the sport.

"There has been a decline in the number of people playing golf regularly which has contributed to falling numbers of golf club memberships," said Ross Golf Club spokesman Keith Ray.

"Tri-Golf is an initiative that focuses on increasing participation and discovering talented young people in sport.

These initiatives provide a ‘win-win' scenario where everyone benefits."

Meanwhile, Bob Baker finished the day’s top performer at the fifth winter stableford competition.

The event determined the 12 male members that qualify to play in the Annual Barnfield Trophy event on Sunday, April 2.

Baker finished ahead of 88 competitors with a score of 44 points.

His brilliant round included 10 pars and a birdie which is equivalent to Baker playing eight shots better than his handicap of 14.

Stephen Gregory was runner up with 40 points having qualified in the previous round, while Philip Thompson scored an impressive 40 to get a one shot handicap reduction.

Thompson and Baker are joined in the qualifying list for Division One players by Phil Taylor, who scored 39 points, Martyn Print, who carded 38, and Simon Mills and Derek Hancock, who shot 37.

From Handicap Division Two, the six qualifiers were William Cansdale, Roger Alford, Shaun Sturge, David Dockray, John Sherahilo and Allen Bartlett.
