ROSS Golf Club's Annual Juniors Singles Open recently attracted 26 accomplished young golfers from across Herefordshire and neighbouring counties.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, many players from the home club featured prominently, in particular 18-year-old Niall Powell.

The teen, now sporting a three handicap, capped an exceptional year by being the best gross performer of the day, with a 73 which included three birdies and a back nine holes scored at two under gross par.

Powell will have enjoyed the fact that one of his birdies took place at the course's most difficult hole - the 14th.

In second place with a gross 79 was 15-year-old Cam Haines who just 12 months ago was playing off a handicap of 15 and, through dedication and hard work at the Ross Juniors Academy, has remarkably reduced it to just four.

It was perhaps not surprising that at the club's Annual Trophy Presentation evening, Haines received the Most Improved Player of 2015 award.

Ross Juniors captain, 16-year-old Sophie Price, an eight handicapper, took third place in the gross category with 80.

In the nett category the final scoresheet was headed by visiting 23 handicapper Sam Macdonald with a nett 67, followed by 13 handicapper Caitlin McNeil with a nett 69.

Ross Juniors player, 14-year-old Ted Williams, who scored a nett 72, and 12-year-old Harry Griffiths, with a nett 74, were only just off the pace.

Meanwhile, Powell and Haines were also in the news at the Ross club's Annual Knock-Out Finals day when they went head-to-head to decide the winner of the Annual Bob Beavis Juniors Cup, with Powell coming through to take the prestigious award.

The match was played early in the morning so he could team up with Janet Hyndman in the Howard Porter Mixed Foursomes Final when the pair managed to overcome Arthur and Jan Reid.

Haines received the David Sainsbury Juniors Cup in addition to his Most Improved Player of the Year award but Powell was again successful in clinching the club's Centenary Cup.

Powell can be found most weekends voluntarily helping aspiring young players at the Ross Club in their golfing development.

Meanwhile, Ross Golf Club's Annual Knock-out Finals day proved an exciting affair.

Sixteen-year-old Ross Juniors Captain, Sophie Price, faced Sarah Forrest for the Ladies Champion prize.

The opening 18 holes were all square but it was Price who found some added mental strength to move five holes up by the time the 27th hole was played.

She maintained this momentum to win and was able to accept a host of accolades throughout the trophy presentation evening which followed.

The 36-holes final to determine the men's champion saw Dave Gardner come out on top.
