Seven birdies fail to earn victory on rain-swept Borth links

Kington professional Andy Gealy recorded seven birdies but had to settle for a second place when the Bradnor Blueballs held their February outing at Borth & Ynyslas.

It rained from start to finish but the links course - and the players - stood up to it well with Howard Perry and Joe James winning with a useful 43 points.

Gealy and his partner Ken Hill were only one behind, while Colin Mansell and Doug Taylor were third on 41.

The latest Sunday morning event at Kington was a three-man team stableford with two scores to count on each hole.

Results: 1 Ray Evans, Nigel Venables and Joe James 81 pts, 2 Sid Price, Terry Weight and Adam Handley 79.

Seniors pairs better-ball: 1 Arthur Thompson and Phil Gould 51 pts, 2 Frank Goodwin and Tony Humphries 46, 3 George Farr and Bill Eaton 44.

Ladies' Easter accumulator, fifth round, silver division: 1 Chris Thomas 27 pts, 2 Claire Burton 25; bronze: 1 Jean Williams 27, 2 Pauline Traylor 25; sixth round, silver: 1 Angela Wilkes 27, 2 Claire Burton 25; bronze: 1 Priscilla Scott 27, 2 Barbara Passey 27.

Despite wet conditions, some fine golf was played in Leominster's yellow ball team competition.

Results: 1 Paul Creasey, Kevin Green, Alan Hard and Joss Ingram 166 pts, 2 Tony Bufton, Terry Bufton, Colin Henshaw and Mark Humpage 164, 3 Jeremy Lawrence, Steve Codd, Adam Phillips and Lee Chapman 161.

Belmont also played a team competition in the form of a Texas Scramble.

Results: 1 Mike Owens, Elwyn Hamer, Colin Warrilow and Bill Youll 57.6, 2 Andy Smith, Roger Woolley, Geoff Foster and Terry Thomas 58.2.

Brian Turner was the winner of the latest round of the Seniors' winter league.

Results: 1 Brian Turner 36 pts, 2 Terry Thomas 35, 3 Mike Ingram 34.

Hurcombe Plate: 1 Paul Gimlick 42 pts, 2 Brian Goode 41, 3 Phil Skyrme 37.

Yellow Peril: 2 Wref Digings, Phil Skyrme, Alan Standring and Brian Turner 146 pts, 2 Ken Shurmer, Tony Body, Brian Matthews and Gordon Ridell 146.

The Hereford Municipal course played long in wet and windy conditions for the February stableford and low scores were recorded all round.

Results: 1 Shaun Vivian 35 pts, 2 Alan Leake 34, 3 Manu Bonnel 34; best lady: Sharon Helps 30.

Municipal Ladies finished runners-up to Thornbury after hosting the last match in the NAPGC triangular series of the Mary Foster Bowl.

Vice-captain Jenny Wildman had the top score of 26 points and was assisted by Sharon Helps, 24, and Pam Williams, 20.

Match scores: Thornbury 77 pts, Hereford Municipal 70, Rodway Hill 59.

Herefordshire GC Seniors' five-club stableford results, (0-16): 1 Roy Withers 42 pts, 2 Norman Sockett 40, 3 Tim Townsend 40; (17-28): 1 Colin King 41, 2 John Warren 39, 3 Ray Jones 39.

Ladies' February stableford, division one: 1 Jackie Wheatsone 24 pts, 2 J Oakland 21; division two: 1 G Sandford 24, 2 R Rodick 23; division three: 1 S Powell 26, A Griffiths 24.

Countbacks were needed to decide both divisions of Burghill Valley Seniors' February stableford.

Results, division one: 1 Dave Kitson 35 pts, 2 Guy Amos 35, 3 Mac Park 34; division two: 1 John Potter 35, 2 John Griffiths 35, 3 John Hubert 35.

The ladies' section at Burghill raised £158 for the St Michael's Hospice by playing in a nine-hole red hat competition when the winners were Mary Crockett, Sheila Glinos and Mel Foster.

The ladies also played a three club medal Texas Scramble.

Results: 1 Vicky Howells, Carla Doyle and Heather Burley, 2 Marilyn Howard, Carol Freeman and Maureen Wilde, 3 Christine Baldwin, Doreen Brown and Sally Thomas.

Gareth Williams started Kingstone High School Society's season in positive fashion with a clear victory in the opening event, a Mulligan medal played in very damp conditions.

Results, overall: Gareth Williams 45-22-23, division one: Moray Mackintosh 37-5-32, division two: Don Ingram 38-10-28; division three: Peter James 68-27-41; non-handicap: Mitchell Ingram 39.

The Ross-on-Wye Ladies team gained a 3-1 win over Painswick in the first round of the Daily Mail competition.

A countback was needed to decide the ladies' Bowmaker 16-hole competition.

Results: 1 Wilma Macnamara, Norman Hebdon and Jill Mullan 69 pts, 2 Marie-Anne van Pachterbeke, Barbara Beale and Maddy Patterson 69.

Members of the club have been saddened by the sudden death of Gill Robertson.

There was a countback for division one at Sapey when the February medal was played.

Results, division one: Ray Briggs 82-13-69, 2 Keith Leadbetter 80-11-69, 3 Steve Upton 82-12-70: division two: 1 Calum McLeish 82-19-63, 2 Keith Willis 84-16-68, 3 Peter Henry 92-23-69.

Golfers in the newspaper industry have the chance to support NewstrAid, a registered charity to help needy people associated with the retail side of the trade, at the UK Regional Press Challenge.
