WITH the Ryder Cup much in everyone's thoughts, Ross GC's inaugural Huggett Putter knock-out event was, appropriately won by Brian Huggett, the non playing captain of the Great Britain/ Ireland Team in 1977.

The finalists were James Morgan, Fred Stott, Geoff Robinson and Huggett himself with match referee and assistant professional Oli Leett and competition organizer Neil Lancett.

In the first semi-final, 2013 club champion Morgan got the better of Robinson with Huggett beating Stott in the other last-four match.

Huggett went on to win an exciting final where both players produced a putting masterclass.

For Scots residents outside Scotland, 18th September 2014 was a day when they and the rest of The UK could only watch and await the No result of the Independence Vote. It was also the day The R&A of St Andrews voted by 85%, after 260 years, to admit Ladies. Less publicised was that Jimmy Lindsay of LGC Seniors was playing in The Ancients’ Trophy.

Jimmy was named after his father who, in 1929 and 1930, won The British Schoolboys’ Open. This stands as the only time it has been won back to back. Later, as a member of Glenbervie GC during the 1930s, he played for Scotland around a dozen times and became President of The Scottish Golf Union. At the age of 73 he shot a round below his age, scoring 72.

Jimmy Jnr, playing off 6, won The LGC Ancients’ Trophy at the age of 72 by shooting 71, his first gross score below his age. He had to compete against Charlie Tune who, at the age of 84 receives a generous allowance of “age shots” and has won the trophy 4 times out of the previous 5 years. On this occasion Charlie was pushed into 4th place on count-back.

Although Jimmy was pleased with his Trophy win, which he had not expected, it was his below-age gross which gave him greatest satisfaction.

This weekend was Herefordshire Golf Clubs first Ryder Cup Challenge. 44 Members supported the two day event and teams Europe and USA were drawn. Julian Parry (Club Pro) was the Captain of Europe and Sarah Lawrence (Club Secretary) was the Captain of USA. Saturdays Foursomes and 4BBB ended leaving the USA an 8 point deficit. Well Sunday’s Singles was a different ball game, Team USA fought strongly back and won 13 and half matches out of the 22, which was just amazing, but alas not enough as Europe got into the lead during the final 5 matches and successfully won this years campaign 23 ½ to USA 20 ½ . A superb weekend whereby everyone really got into the spirit of Match Play, they all enjoyed each others company over a pint and good food. A huge thank you goes out to all the members who participated, all the staff of HGC and we are looking forward to organising a similar event for 2015, with our next Ryder Cup Challenge at HGC taking place in 2016.
