BURGHILL Valley have won the Shropshire and Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs' Shropshire Star Trophy for the sixth time.

The Herefordshire club's squad of Andy Preece, James Heath, Jon Young and Wesley Jones scored an impressive 111 points in the 18-hole stableford competition to win by two points from Mile End, on 109, with the host club, Shropshire GC, in third.

Twenty-three teams took part in the competition.

"The conditions were tough and we had a few bad holes, but everyone contributed to the cause," said Burghill vice-captain Preece.

"We were unaware that we had won until the presentation at the dinner in the evening, but as the scores were announced from third to first we were very surprised and happy to find out that we had won."

Burghill Valley have qualified for the fourth round of the Daily Mail Classic for the first time. They achieved this with a 5-0 victory over local rivals Leominster Golf Glub. The team was: Dave Tedstone, Lou Haines, Dean Powell, Jon Young and Phil Harrison.

Newcomer Neil Lloyd, who joined Ross following the closure of Belmont GC earlier this year, wasted no time in getting on the club honours board when he won the bogey-format Bradley Court Cup with the score of +4, taking the title on countback from Mark Whitmore.

Ross Seniors won 6-2 at the Stinchcombe Hill Course while, in the North Glos Foursomes League match at the Cotswold Edge GC, Ross A lost 4-2 with the points coming David Barnard/Matthew Humphries 2/1 and Niall Powell/Harry Butler 1 up.

Terry Jarrett's Club Team also came close when they visited the Kington Club losing 3.5/2.5 with the Ross points coming from wins by James Morgan/Barry Norton 2 up, Colin Bennion/Kevin D'Lonra 5/3 and a halved match involving Nigel Yates/Doug David.
