STUART Jones has sealed Ross Golf Club’s first major trophy of the season.

The landscape gardener shot 41 points to win the Barnfield Trophy on a countback.

Paul Element and Geoff Thomas also enjoyed excellent rounds and both fired 41 points but Jones prevailed with the best back-nine hole performance.

Jones will see his name on the club's honours board and he can also look forward to the evening in September and playing off a 16 handicap.

Jones played his most effective golf in his opening holes in a 44-strong field with members who had qualified throughout the winter months.

With five pars and just four dropped shots, Jones amassed a highly impressive 23 points at the half way stage and, with 18 points scored on the remaining nine holes, he would have been satisfied with his 41 points scorecard.

Tony Biggs and Richard Matthews carded 39 points with Roger Alford and Nigel Evans securing 39 points’ scores.

Bob Cook, Tim Kefalas, Ross Jenkins, David Bufton, David Thrower and David Whitehead returned 37-point hauls.

Ross Men’s A team opened their North Gloucestershire Foursomes League campaign with a 6-0 home whitewash of Naunton Downs.

The team achieved a succession of victories through James Dobbs/Niall Powell 5/4, James Morgan/Steve Wallbank 6/4, Nick Ellis/David Daniels 3/1, Steve Bennett/Tony Howells 2 up, Jamie Wilde/Charles Moore 2/1 and Ryan Jones/Tim Wyatt 3/1.

Terry Jarrett’s Ross Club Team roared to a 5-1 victory against Newport Golf Club to win the Dragon Trophy.
