WESTFIELDS got their league season off to a flying start thanks to a thumping 6-1 win over South Normanton Athletic.

Sean Edwards' side opened their account in the 12th minute when a Ben Hayes cross was challenged by Ben Miller, only for an opposing defender to slice the ball into his own net.

Westfields continued to increase the pressure on the visitors and made it 2-0 thanks to Hayes.

South Normanton then came back into the game and Keiron Blackburn made a fine finger-tip save to deflect the ball around the post.

However, Westfields were causing havoc down the flanks, with Aidan Thomas and Hayes causing South Normanton problems.

Therefore, it was no surprise when they made it 3-0 when Miller got on the end of a Thomas cross.

Thomas then scored a fine individual goal three minutes after the break before drilling another shot home shortly afterwards to make it 5-0.

South Normanton eventually got on the scoresheet through Kevin Hemagou, but Westfields restored their five-goal advantage when Miller broke away from a long clearance before dispatching a shot into the top left-hand corner of the goal.

Westfields now go to Haughmond tomorrow night for their next Midland Football Premier Division match before facing AFC Wulfrunians on Saturday in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup.

Their next home game is against Lye Town on Wednesday, August 23.
