WESTFIELDS' hopes of finishing in the top three of the Midland Football League Premier Division are all but over following a 2-1 defeat at Lye Town.

Sean Edwards' side now seven points behind the Black Country side with just four games left.

And Sporting Khalsa, who are fourth, also have a game in hand.

Ben Hayes continued his fine goalscoring form for Westfields by firing them ahead from close range before Aidan Thomas saw a shot saved.

Westfields suffered a blow when goalkeeper Matt Gwynne had to come off with a leg injury and Ben Miller sustained concussion.

Lye grew in confidence after the break and equalised through Sam Tye.

Westfields still had opportunities to go back in front, with Thomas whipping over a couple of good crosses.

However, midway through the half, captain Phil Glover gave away a free-kick just outside the penalty area and the set-piece was headed homer by Jack Till to put Lye ahead for the first time.

Substitute keeper Keiron Blackburn then had to make full-length saves to prevent Lye scoring again, while at the other end, Chris Ham saw his effort saved.

Westfields make the long trip to Long Eaton United this Saturday before going to Highgate United next Wednesday.
