WESTFIELDS midfielder Craig Jones is fully confident his team can still gain promotion from Midland Football League Premier Division despite recent wobbles.

The allpay.park side became odds-on favourites to win the division after winning their opening 10 games.

But Sean Edwards’ team – who reached the first round of the FA Cup – have only won four of their last 10 games and are 15 points adrift of leaders Alvechurch, albeit with six games in hand.

“I still believe we can still win the league because everyone has still to play each other yet and points are up for grabs,” said Jones.

“I’ve been here five or six seasons now and I came here to help the club get promoted.

“We’ve given ourselves a proper chance so if we don’t go up this season, we will be really disappointed.

“We were killing teams off early in the season, but now we’re not converting as many chances into goals. We cannot blame it on the cup run though because the goal has always been the league.

“It’s not good enough and we need to cut out our mistakes.”

Westfields could only draw 2-2 at home to Shawbury United last Saturday, with Jones scoring both of their goals.

“We picked up another point but we’re dropping too many at the moment,” added Jones.

“With all due respect, we should be beating teams like Shawbury and because they beat us at their place as well, it’s disappointing.”

Jones has now hit his goal target of 20 for the season and is pleased with how he is playing.

“I always set myself 20 goals because my game is to score from midfield,” said Jones.

“There are still 18 games left, so on a personal level, I’m pleased and I thought my performance was good on Saturday.

“But the bigger picture is to always get three points.”

Former Shawbury striker Nathan Hodge made his debut for Westfields and Jones was impressed with the new recruit.

“He had a chance to make it 2-1 to us and that probably would have killed them off,” said Jones.

“He looked lively and it’s good that he now plays for us.

“He has scored 25 goals this season and, with the amount of chances we create, I’m sure he’ll score a lot for us.”

Jones opened the scoring against Shawbury with a header and Westfields had chances to increase their lead.

Hodge’s shot went just wide of the far post before Shawbury’s goalkeeper saved from Richard Greaves and Chris Ham.

Shawbury equalised just after the break through Stuart Ellis before the same player put the visitors ahead.

Hodge again went close for Westfields, while the home side also hot the crossbar.

Sirdic Grant and Aidan Thomas were brought off the bench as Westfields searched for an equalised and they drew level two minutes from time thanks to Jones.

And it could even have been three points had Natham Summers’ header not been disallowed for offside in stoppage time.
