WESTFIELDS player Aidan Thomas admits the team let themselves down following an excellent start to the season.

The allpay.park club were flying at the start of the campaign, which resulted in their best ever FA Cup run.

But poor performances followed and Westfields ended up finishing fifth in the Midland Football League Premier Division.

"We have all struggled to pinpoint the actually reason why our season went so downhill," said Thomas.

"We were brilliant at the start of the season but for some reason it hasn't gone to plan towards the last half of the season, which is a shame.

"It was a brilliant run in the FA Cup but all the hype around it took our attention away from certain aspects.

"But that finished in November and it wasn't until after then that our season started going downhill.

"I don't know if commitment changed and we just deflated after the FA Cup finished.

"We had hit our high of the season and it was very difficult to keep up at the same level.

"But we can't just put it down to that, I think we've all let ourselves down this year."

Westfields did finish on a high though by thrashing Walsall Wood 4-0 thanks to Thomas netting a hat-trick.

The win resulted in Walsall Wood being relegated from the division.

"It was a good win and it was nice to finish in convincing fashion and hopefully we can carry that into next season," added Thomas

"I've chipped in with a fair few this season but as far as hat-tricks go, they are quite rare."

Craig Jones – who was awarded the Westfields supporters' player-of-the-season award – also caused Walsall Wood havoc, with Sirdic Grant impressing.

Westfields opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Thomas converted Jones' cross before Grant set up Chris Ham to curl the ball home.

Jones and Thomas again linked up after the break to make it 3-0 before Thomas sealed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Grant was brought down.
