WESTFIELDS are now fighting a battle to even finish in the top five in the Midland Football League Premier Division following an awful run of form.

Sean Edwards’ side have only won two of their last nine games and have now been overtaken by Sporting Khalsa.

Coventry United are also now only three points behind Westfields, albeit having played a game more, while Heanor are five adrift.

Westfields’ woes deepened last Saturday when second-from-bottom Brocton snatched a 2-1 away win after Craig Jones looked to have salvaged a draw.

The home team started strongly and Sirdic Grant had three good chances to score within the first 20 minutes.

Westfields were then gifted an opportunity to open the scoring when they were awarded a penalty.

But Jones saw his spot-kick brilliantly saved by visiting keeper Ashley Lunn.

It was the third consecutive game that Jones had seen a penalty saved.

Brocton came into the game after the break and snatched the lead through a Dan Lomas header following a free-kick.

Jones then hit the crossbar from two yards out, before Aidan Thomas and Richard Greaves were both denied.

Another chance from Jones went begging before he did manage to score.

Julio da Mata charged down a clearance, which enabled Jones to lash the ball home.

But it was Brocton who grabbed the winner when Nick Wellecomme rifled home a right-wing cross following a counter-attack.

Westfields –who saw their game at Highgate United on Tuesday postponed due to a waterlogged pitch – are home again this Saturday whey they entertain 10th-placed Long Eaton United.

That is followed by back-to-back matches against Rocester, starting with a trip to Staffordshire next weekend.
