WINGER Ben Hayes has finally signed for Westfields.

The allpay.park side tried to sign the 22 year-old in October but the winger opted to stay at Southern League Division One South & West side Bishops Cleeve.

But the pacey wide man – who scored 20 goals last season for Malvern Town before joining Cleeve in the summer – has now put pen to paper.

“We are delighted to get our man after months of tracking him,” said Westfields chief executive Andy Morris.

“He’s an exciting player and we hope he can help us win some games and improve our form until the end of the season.”

Hayes, who is in his final year of a business management degree at the University of Worcester, made his debut in last Saturdays 2-1 defeat at AFC Wulfrunians.

Westfields started slowly in that game and were a goal down after just eight minutes when Phil Glover’s mistake was seized on by striker Jake Webb.

Nicky Turton scored from close in after beating keeper Kieron Blackburn to extend Wulfarians’ lead.

Before the break, the hosts were down to 10 men when their defender handled the ball on the line.

The usually reliable penalty taker, Craig Jones, saw his effort saved by John Bateman to preserve the home sides’ 2-0 lead.

Substitute Matt Reeve scored from the edge of the box with 15 minutes left to set up an exciting climax to the game.

Glover missed a golden opportunity to level things up but his header hit the bar and the hosts managed to hold for the three points.

Westfields have now only won once their last six matches and their next two league games are vital if they want to finish in the top three places in the Midland Premier League.

They host second from bottom Brocton this Saturday before travelling to Highgate United three days later in a rearranged game.

Westfields currently lie in fourth place, five points behind third-placed Lye Town.
