PEGASUS pulled off an FA Cup surprise when they beat higher-graded Long Buckby to move into the competition’s extra preliminary round.

The United Counties League side, who are managed by former Hereford United midfielder Scott Goodwin, were hit by a Pegasus goal after just eight minutes.

Cory Hyde latched on to a through ball and was tackled by Nick Writham. Hyde was quickly back on his feet and fired a shot across Tom Stephenson and into the net from the edge of the area.

A shot from Jimmy Moreton was deflected wide and Sam Harrison headed a Marc Davies cross against the bar.

Long Buckby hit back and Sam Boltwistle also struck the woodwork before Louie Duprie sped on to a through ball to beat Mikel Corbisier.

But 10 minutes after the break, Moreton beat the visitors’ offside trap and crossed for Tom Dawson to guide home his first Pegasus goal at the far post.

Juniors defended well in the closing stages to earn a trip to Sutton Coldfield Town in the preliminary round.
