THE HEREFORDSHIRE FA are consulting players and coaches about whether further levels of junior football are needed.

Currently the Herefordshire Junior leagues run up to the under-17 age category and the HFA are considering whether an extra tier of junior football is needed.

"We are looking to bridge the gap between youth and adult football," said Dan Chance, HFA football strategy manager.

"You can play adult football from the age of 16 and there is currently a junior league for under-17s. So we are seeing if people are happy with that and understand the gap between 17 and senior football to further help youths get into the adult game.

"We are trying to find out what people want and if we could set up a league for 18s,19s,21s or an under-23 league has been suggested. We would also like to know whether those teams would like a cup, league.

"We are trying to find out if people want that stepping stone or not."

The Herefordshire FA Giantkillers Cup last week saw under-18 sides from Pegasus Juniors and Hereford FC compete in the final, both of which compete in the Midlands Floodlight Youth League.

"The Giantkillers Cup Final was nice to see to see both teams play in such a good way," added Chance.

"I think there is still a good amount of players coming through and the purpose of the consultation is to see if we can help that in some way. We are just trying to find out what the players and coaches want, whether there is a demand or not to further bridge the gap between junior and senior football or if people are happy as it is.

"Obviously whatever we run we want to have a minimal impact on our existing junior and senior provisions within county."
