WESTFIELDS manager Sean Edwards has compared his team to Premier League giants Arsenal following a 1-0 defeat to Heanor Town in Midland Football League Premier Division.

Edwards believes his team are unable to grind out results which has cost them at times this season.

“We play some lovely football at times but we are a bit like Arsenal," said Edwards.

“Our keeper was brilliant and made three fantastic saves before half-time, but from our first half performance we were not unlucky to lose the game, we started slow and were poor in the opening 25 minutes.”

A penalty from Elliot Reeves wont he game for Heanor, but Edwards felt the decision was harsh.

“It’s a poor decision, their lad has had a shot and was caught after by our player who was attempting to make a block," said Edwards.

This defeat means Westfields have now lost five of their opening 12 league games but Edwards is still aiming for promotion.

“Our targets haven’t changed, we are still aiming for as high as possible with the ultimate aim being promotion," he said.

“We have a mountain to climb and the league table doesn’t look good at the moment but it’s the final one that’s important and I believe we can catch the top sides.”

Due to FA Cup and Vase games, Westfields have played the least games in the Midland premier league. Edwards doesn’t want to use the fixture congestion as an excuse.

“We have 20 good players and one of the best squads I’ve seen here," said Edwards.

“The fixture backlog is the same for a number of teams and I feel the only problem it causes is the fact we can’t work on the mistakes in training due to games coming so quickly.”

“Our Achilles heel this season is not having a consistent starting 11.

"We are changing the back four nearly every game so that relationship can’t form and were are not as solid in defence.”

Westfields are next in action against Haughmond on Wednesday before they travel to Devon to take on Western league high-fliers outfit Willand Rovers in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase.

“We know they have good pedigree in the competition, they always do well and they have some good players," added Edwards.

“Their league isn’t as demanding as ours so they will be fresher due to them having less games than us.”
