WESTFIELDS manager Sean Edwards says his players must start taking responsibility if they want to reignite their promotion charge.

Edwards' team have only taken two points from their last four games to languish in fourth place in Midland Football League Premier Division.

And with games in hand now running out, Edwards knows his team have got to start putting a winning run together as soon as possible.

"Certain players have got to take responsibility because there's only so much you can do as a manager," said Edwards.

"I've tried to bring players in to improve the squad, and to be fair the ones who have come in have done well.

"Chris Ham was exceptional on Saturday and scored two goals.

"But you've got to keep clean sheets, like Alvechurch and Lye Town do.

"I cannot criticise the players' effort, but we are falling at a rapid pace.

"We are unable to keep clean sheets at the minute, which has been our Achilles heel.

"The players are giving everything they have got, but are coming up short.

"We have taken two points our of 12, which is not good enough.

"But it's the goals we are conceding that is the most disappointing thing.

Westfields only conceded one goal in their opening five matches and they went on a 10-game winning run.

Edwards concedes that losing key defender Kane Kahaki to injury has severely cost his side and he now has to cope with injuries to other defenders.

"Kane was playing so well, but since the end of November he has not been around and it's had a major effect," said Edwards.

"Sam Rawlings has also missed part of the season and it's difficult to replace those players."

Westfields lost 4-2 to Heanor Town on Saturday after twice taking the lead.

Edwards was again unable to pick his strongest side, which he admits led to his side losing the game.

"Sam Plane was ill, Nathan Summers had a a hamstring problem, Sam Rawlings came back in but wasn't 100 per cent and James Febery only just came back from suspension," said Edwards.

"We played extremely well in the first half, but Aidan Thomas and Ben Miller were also carrying knocks."

Ham opened the scoring for Westfields with a header in the 13th minute, but Heanor equalised with a Nathan Benger penalty shortly after the break.

But Westfields hit back immediately thanks to another Ham goal before the home side made it 2-2 with a Jack Warner effort with 10 minutes to go.

Jay Cooper then put Heanor ahead for the first time before he scored again to seal the win.
