HEREFORD Lads Club manager Danny Moon hopes yesterday's good turnout at the County Ground was not just a one off as his club seek to get all the help they can to survive.

As reported by the Hereford Times, the Widemarsh Common based club are in dire need of money after being denied promotion and could fold if not enough money is forthcoming.

Lads Club beat Wednesfield 2-1 in their opening game in West Midlands (Regional) League Division One and Moon has thanked the supporters who turned up.

"What has probably helped us for the first month is the big crowd that turned up," said Moon.

"We would love to see a big crowd again, especially if we can stay clear of Hereford playing at home because that would bring us a good amount of numbers.

"People have got to realise that their sons, their daughters, even their grandads played here and if they want to keep it going, we need some help.

"If we don't get it, then may be by the end of August going into September, we may have a struggle on."

Moon added that Lads Club can't do anything about being denied promotion to the Premier Division and the task now is to do it all again.

"We've got to forget what has happened, it's hard, but we've got to prove everybody wrong got on with it, get everything we need to do and move on," he said.

Talking about the match, Moon felt his side deserved the win.

"I think we totally deserved to be 2-0 up in the first half and I think it could have been four or five, but we were guilty of missing half chances and a couple of guilt edged ones," said Moon.

"I was disappointed that we conceded the penalty, I don't think either of them were penalties, but I think we were solid throughout and we could have scored a couple of goals in the second half.

"I don't think Steve Bell [Lads Club goalkeeper] had too much to do and what he did, he did well.

"We controlled the game when we needed to, we've got a couple of new players and different formations, but it's all about winning and we move on to the next one."

Zac Sirrell had the first meaningful chance of the game when he curled an effort wide in the 11th minute.

But Lads Club did open the scoring just four minutes later when Tom Harding stroked the ball home.

And it was 2-0 in the 27th minute when Wednesfield goalkeeper Jonathan Foster could not prevent Dan Herbert's cross going straight in.

Jamie Cuthbertson then saw an effort tipped behind for a corner as Lads Club went into the break 2-0 to the good.

The second half was more of a scrappy affair, with Lads Club looking comfortable.

However, Wednesfield were awarded a penalty in the 78th minute.

Thankfully for Lads Club, Joshua Jones blazed the spot kick over the bar.

Another penalty was awarded to the away side four minutes from time and this time Reece Mason made no mistake.

But Lads Club held on to earn a vital opening day win.
