A TOTAL of 32.3 million Britons watched the World Cup Final in 1966 on TV from their living rooms or pubs around the country, yet Hereford's Pat Morrow wasn’t one of them -  she was one of the lucky few that view the spectacle from inside the stadium - 50 years ago today.

Pat, 69, was working with members of the England Supporters Club at the time and accompanied them to games whenever a ticket became available.

She attended a string of games and ironically started to support West Germany as she followed their progression through the tournament.

And she watched them knock out the USSR in the semi-final, though that allegiance quickly faded once England became their final opponent.

Pat was just 19 as she travelled from car from Hereford to Wembley and remembers the day fondly.

“Details of the match are now a blur to me, everybody has seen the match and the goals for themselves," said Pat, who supports Hereford FC and Westfields.

"I mainly recall the atmosphere.

"I can’t really describe it, it was just exciting, I’d never experienced anything like it before and I haven’t since.”

Pat stayed behind with the rest of the fans to celebrate England’s greatest ever footballing triumph and laughed as she described how Nobby Styles danced for the crowd with no shirt and no teeth, “it really was quite funny”.

The trip from Wembley back to Hereford was equally as exciting for Pat.

“It was pure euphoria, everything was so loud," she recalled.

"Every time we reached a crossroads the sight of our flags meant that we passed through straight away and we sang the whole way home”.

It is incredible that 50 years later memories of 1966 can still evoke such passion and excitement.

“I know it sounds hard to believe but I woke up the next morning with ‘England’ still ringing in my ears," added Pat.

Hopefully it won’t take a further 50 years for another wave of euphoria to sweep the nation.
