TWO new players trained with Hereford FC yesterday.

Stourport Swifts striker Joe Phillips and winger Jamal Lawrence, who was at Cheltenham Town last season, are both on trial at the Edgar Street club.

Phillips scored 15 goals in all competitions for Stourport last season, while Lawrence is a pacy winger/striker who is the nephew of former England cricketer David "Syd" Lawrence.

"We've also got a few boys from UITC and we did have another lad training with us, but he's injured, so hopefully he will be back with us next week," said Hereford manager Pete Beadle.

"Joe can play anywhere along the front and Jamal is primarily a winger, while the other lad can play in midfield or at the back.

"We played Stourport four times last year and I thought in every game, Joe was one of the standout players for them.

"It was difficult when I approached him with his dad being the manager there, but I spoke to his dad after the second leg of the League Cup semi-final and asked him if I could speak to Joe about coming over in pre-season and he said 'yeah, feel free, go ahead'.

"So Joe has come over and trained really well so far.

"We're always looking to bring in new recruits and make the squad stronger.

"At the moment, we've got what we've got and we probably couldn't cope with too many more, so we'll see where we go in the next week or two."

Beadle added that he has been pleased with how training has gone so far.

"The lads have come back in good shape and they look fit and ready to go," said Beadle.

"We've had six sessions now and got one more next week before the little spell of games."

Yesterday's session at Victoria Park was primarily an 11 versus 11 game.

"You can do all the running in pre-season, but when you get on the pitch and it's actually 11 v 11, it's a different type of running," said Beadle.

"They had just over an hour and they talked about a few things to get ready for next week.

"We've done all the physical work, they've started to sharpen up now and we've got a nice bunch of games close together."
