HEREFORDSHIRE Football Association's Roger Goodwin says the county is crying out out for more volunteers to ensure the game can continue to flourish.

Goodwin, who is the football strategy manager at the HFA, believes lifestyle changes are at the root of the problem.

"Numbers in adult 11 versus 11 matches are still down, especially in Sunday League," said Goodwin.

"Significantly, since 2008, we have had people not being able to get away from work, so we have to ensure there is something for everyone to play football in the county.

"We are crying out for more volunteers and it is getting to a crisis point.

"If anyone is interested in football and have got a few hours to spare and want to get involved in a football club, then we are more than happy to speak to them, whether it be adult or youth football.

"Their skill set may be not as a traditional coach or manager, but may be they can offer something else, like washing kits or in finance."

Ensuring anyone can play the beautiful game in the county, the HFA have a number of programmes, including holding an adult recreational centre at Hereford Leisure Centre every Saturday morning from 9.30am to 10.30am.

"It is about re-engaging people back into football, so you just turn up, pay £3.50 and play," said Goodwin.

"It really is a very flexible option."

Futsal and veteran leagues are also provided by the HFA, while walking football for over 50s is also proving popular with sessions held in Hereford, Leominster and Ross-on-Wye.

"Our oldest member is 78, so it proves age is no barrier," said Goodwin.
