WESTFIELDS had to settle for a point against Coventry Sphinx in their Midland Football League Premier Division match.

Jamie Cuss and Dean Lee scored in quick succession to put the allpay.park side 2-1 up in the first half, but Sphinx stormed back to level after the break.

The result leaves Westfields in 11th place in the table.

Sphinx had the first chance of the game when an Ashley Cain free kick was superbly saved by Westfields debutant Harvey Rivers.

But the resulting corner led to Ashley Jackson to head home.

Rivers was in the thick of the action and produced an outstanding reaction save to keep his team in the game.

But Westfields equalised when Cuss managed to wriggle into space before sending a left-footed shot curling round Martin Murphy and into the bottom corner.

Lee then headed home a cross to put Westfields ahead two minutes before Craig Jones sent his shot inches wide of a post.

In the second half, Tom Boyle had a great chance to widen the gap but his effort went over the bar.

Sphinx gathered momentum and Rivers was called into action once again to keep out a shot.

But he was undone on the 65th minute mark when Jack Rooney found space on the edge of the 18-yard box to rifle a shot home.

Westfields then saw an appeal for a goal waved away after the ball squirmed under Murphy’s body before managing to hold on to it and prevent a goal.
