WESTFIELDS were swept aside by high-flying Basford United at allpay.park.

Sean Edwards' side were lucky that goalkeeper Matt Gwynne was in inspired form otherwise the scoreline could have been greater.

Westfields had an early chance to open the scoring in the fifth minute but Craig Jones dragged his effort wide from 18 yards out.

Gwynne then produced a superb save to keep out Stuart Hendrie, brother of former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie.

Basford took the lead after 36th minutes when Ruben Wiggin-Thomas beat three defenders before slipping the ball past Gwynne.

Westfields were lucky not to be further down at the break and had Gwynne to thank for producing another fine stop.

After the break, Gwynne continued to thwart the visitors by denying Hendrie before Nathaniel Lewars had a great chance to equalise.

However the former Hereford striker was foiled by the Basford keeper.

Wiggin-Thomas then sealed the win when he stabbed the ball home with just over 20 minutes to go.

A young Pegasus Juniors side went down 1-0 to third place Gornal Athletic in West Midlands League Premier Division.

Both teams struggled to impose themselves in the early stages of the game due to the difficult conditions caused by an earlier frost.

There was very little goalmouth action during the first half as passes went astray and defences were on top.

The only serious attempt on the Gornal goal came after 38 minutes when Kiea Cowley smacked his effort against the top of the crossbar after beating three defenders.

Gornal took the lead six minutes after the break when Carl Martin curled the ball into the penalty area for centre-back Matt Vaughan to power home a header past Nathan Phillips.

The home side scented a big victory, but Pegasus held firm and even had the chance to level the game near the end, but Andy Mowen's effort was deflected onto a post.

Wellington also came unstuck in a 1-0 defeat against top-of-the-table AFC Bridgnorth.

Paul Jones had Welly's best effort in a goalless first half, but his effort went over the bar.

Dave Price had another effort after the break, but his shot clipped a defender onto the cross bar before Bridgnorth grabbed the winner with a powerful shot shortly before the end.
