WELLINGTON look like missing out on a place in next season's FA Cup.

The villagers needed to finish in seventh place to guarantee themselves a place qualifying rounds of the world's premier club knockout tournament.

But their season has petered out into a disappointing end with the club winning only two of their last seven games, a run of form which sees them slip to 10th in the table.

“It’s not been good enough of late,” explained disappointed manager Derek Williams. "The season, up until the last few games, had been a very positive one with lots for us to take and build upon for next season so it’s a shame to finish on this note.

"It takes the edge of it, really."

It’s not only the manager that has been disappointed with recent events on the pitch, the players themselves are at a loss to explain what has gone wrong over the last few games as Josh Hunt explained.

“We had been on a really good run a couple of months back," he said. "We were looking like we could achieve seventh and qualify for the FA Cup which is something we having been looking at doing for a while, at least since I joined around Christmas time, so to have produced some of the performances that we have has just not been good enough.

"We haven’t done anything differently in our approaches to games or in training so maybe mentally we haven’t been 100% on our game and that has cost us the seventh-placed finish we were after”.

With Wellington a massive 20 points behind 6th place there will be a lot of work to be done during pre-season to get the players up to the level required to attempt to bridge the gap to the teams at the top of the table.

“We are too far off them at the moment," said Williams. "I think that’s clear for everyone to see and we have got to accept that and move on.

"We are going to have a look around, over the summer, and see if we can bring some freshness to the team, there are positions we need to fill, there are no positions that are safe.

"On their day the boys can do it but this season we have had to many days that weren’t their days and we need to address that."

Having not been in charge for pre-season at the start of this campaign Williams is looking forward to developing the team his own way next time round.

“In Hereford, a lot of players make promises but until they actually come and sign on then you never know where you actually are," he said.

"I don’t think I will do too much differently, but it’s good to get them from day one next season.

"I will probably look at the fitness a bit more, we’ve tended to tire in tight games towards the last 10 minutes or so, especially these last few games of the season, so maybe that will earn us a few more points next time around.”

It wasn’t a case of tiring in the last 10 minutes against Ellesmere Rangers last Saturday, Wellington were just simply blown away by a side in top form.

The game was even enough for the first 15 minutes but then three goals in 10 minutes boosted Rangers, inspired by West Midlands Premier League player of the season, Marco Adaggio.

The first came as Adaggio fired home through a crowded penalty area, the ball finding its way into the back of the net via a few deflections.

A Mike O’Reily goal made it two before the Rangers third came just five minutes later as Adaggio found the net for the second time with an exquisite lob from just over 20 yards out.

Wellington did have a chance to draw one back before half-time but Matt Williams sw his penalty saved by the Rangers goalkeeper after being brought down in the box.

Three goals in five second-half minutes sealed the win, the first coming as Adaggio sealed his hat-trick, heading home unmarked from a corner.

Captain Steve O’Reily added the other two for the visitors before Wellington managed to grab a consolation goal through Ben Fischer as he fired home from 25 yards to ensure that the home fans at least had one moment to cheer about.
