FORMER Torquay United player Saul Halpin is facing a fitness battle to play for Westfields in next Wednesday’s HFA County Challenge Cup final at Edgar Street.

Halpin hurt his hip in Westfields’ 3-1 Midland Alliance defeat at lowly Heath Hayes last Thursday night

Halpin, 22, made seven Football League appearances for Torquay.

He has been grabbing the headlines for his goal-scoring prowess since arriving at Westfields.

“Saul is someone we tracked since November,” said manager Sean Edwards.

“We thought we had him but, at the last minute, he chose to go to Shortwood.

“It didn’t work out for him at Shortwood and he’s come to Westfields to enjoy his football and to score goals.

“He’s got a hip injury but, hopefully, it won’t prevent him from playing in the final.”

Former Pegasus player Jamie Cuss believes Westfields will retain the cup at Edgar Street.

“Pegasus have got some good players but so have we,” said Cuss

“It will be a tough game but, with the ability in our changing room, I think we should win.

“We have a huge amount of quality and we should see it through.

But it’s a cup final and you never know what can happen.”

Cuss is good friends with Pegasus duo Cory Hyde and Anthony Robbins.

“I haven’t spoken to them about the final about it and I won’t mention it to them,” he said.

“Pegasus have good players all over the pitch but it will be a good night if we can win it.”
