Wolverhampton SC 3 Wellington 3

TEN-man Wellington were deprived of a deserved West Midlands Premier Division away win as controversy reigned in Wolverhampton.

Fifteen minutes from time, Wellington, who were leading 3-2 at the time, were awarded a penalty.

Paul Jones, who had been brought down, scored with a shot inside the post but the ball went through the net and behind.

"I think the referee must have been watching for anyone coming into the area and when he looked round, our players were congratulating Jones," said Wellington boss Derek Williams.

"The referee looked at the linesman who gave a goal-kick.

"At that point, everyone went mad - even their manager said it was a goal and their players were laughing. Our players showed the ref the hole in the net but he wouldn't have it."

To add further insult, Wolverhampton scored to level at 3-3.

"At the end, their manager shook my hand and said 'you won 4-3'," said Williams.

Earlier, goals from Matt Williams, Saul Thomas and Jones had given Wellington a 3-0 lead.

The home side pulled two goals back before goalkeeper Matt Eden brought down a home striker, conceded a penalty and was sent off.

Thomas went in goal and saved the spot-kick before veteran Marc Priday replaced him between the posts and gave a superb display.
