GOAL-hungry Commercial have romped to the top of the Jewson Polypipe Herefordshire Sunday League Division One South after blitzing basement club Welsh Club Colts 28-0 in the only league football match played in the county last weekend.

The game went ahead after being switched to the 3G surface at Hereford Academy.

And now the victory has fuelled player-boss Leon Cooke's dreams of a crack at the top flight next season.

"We can now push on for a place in the Premier Division next season," he said.

"We had hoped we could give promotion a shot in this, our first season, and then get established in the Premier Division."

The win in Commercial's first league match since December 1 moves the city side a point clear at the top of the division.

"There are probably three half-decent sides in the division," said Cooke. "But, with four teams dropping out, there are only 14 games so we have six left now.

"We were beaten 5-1 by Vaga in the HFA Sunday Cup but we've strengthened the side since then and I believe we would give them a better game now.

"I think we are strong enough to compete in the Premier Division next season.

"I'd like to thank our sponsor Steve Harrison for making the team happen this season."

The squad boasts players from leading Saturday sides such as Westfields, Pegasus and Lads Club.

Their goalscorers against Welsh Club Colts, who have now conceded 129 times in 10 matches, were Nick Britton (6), Paul Allam (5), Scott Bruton (4), Jamie Cuss (3), Leon Cooke (3), Cory Hyde (2), Mark Phipps, Scott Jones, Luke Wilkins, Daniel Wilkins and an own goal.
