A MATCH in memory of one of Herefordshire cricket’s great characters is taking place at Moccas next month.

Friends and former colleagues of Joe Brown will be playing in a match organised by his brother, David Brown, on Sunday, July 17.

Joe’s family will be unveiling a plaque on the Moccas pavilion in his memory and presenting a bench to the club on his behalf.

The game will be a 20- overs-a-side contest, starting at 2.30pm, and there will be post-match refreshments.

Joe was a founder member of Moccas Cricket Club and had transformed Coppice Field into one of the county’s finest grounds.

Joe died peacefully at home in April, aged 61, having lived all his life in the village.

He had been Moccas’ groundsman ever since the club was formed in 1975. He was also the club’s all-time leading wicket-taker.

Joe scored his maiden half-century for the villagers against Dales in June 2009 - his 32nd year with the club.

All ex-Moccas players interested in donning their whites in the Joe Brown memorial match, should contact David Brown (evenings only) on 01497 820109.
