A COLWALL women’s cricketer has been named Young Coach of the Year for Herefordshire.
Becky Fortnam has received the honour in the Sky Sports Cricket Coach Award 2009.
The 18-year-old, who lives near Ledbury, started playing cricket at primary school and is now a Level 2 coach.
She is the Herefordshire Under-13 girls’ coach, coaches at Colwall Ladies and coaches boys cricket at St Mary’s School in Hereford.
Becky was presented with her award by former England head coach Peter Moores at Lancashire’s Old Trafford ground “We had an excellent day,” said Becky, who is studying Psychology, English and A-level PE at Hereford Sixth Form College “We went to Old Trafford and had a coaching session with Peter Moores and we also had a classroom session,” she said.
The awards were launched at the beginning of 2007 to thank people who have made a significant contribution to the support and development of coaches and coaching.
Becky, a former pupil at John Masefield High School in Ledbury, is the vice-captain of the Colwall Ladies cricket team where she bats, bowls leg-spin and fields at slip.
She plans to coach the Herefordshire under-13 girls’ cricket team next summer and assist with the training of the under-15 team.
Becky is also a talented hockey player and is having trials for the Great Britain Colleges team.
She plays club hockey for Leominster and is at England Hockey tier 1 (formerly West of England). She captained Herefordshire at youth level.
Becky’s brothers, Mathew and James, are also heavily involved in sport.
Her 19-year-old brother, James, plays cricket at Canon Frome and kept goal for Great Britain Colleges hockey team last summer.
He is now studying at UWIC and could face his old hockey team-mates from Leominster in Premier Division 3 this season.
Becky’s other brother, Mathew, aged 23, has also played cricket for Canon Frome. He is a former Herefordshire team coach and a county youth cricketer.
Becky would like to thank all those who have supported her, including coaches Steve Williams, Ed Price, Glyn Harrhy and Christiaan Ferreira.
