WORMELOW captain Tom Cutler is confident his team can have a much better season in Worcestershire County League Division Two.

The village club only managed to stay in the division, but the new skipper feels this campaign will be much better.

"The target is always to stay up, but I don't want it to be like last year," said Cutler.

"Wormelow is only a village club, but if we get players back then there is no reason why we can't be looking towards the top of the league rather than below.

"We've not bowled a team out yet, so maybe we're a bowler short, but Luke Sparrow should be back soon so hopefully we will start beating teams comfortably."

Cutler has taken over the captaincy duties from Ed Melly and says he is enjoying the challenge of leading the team.

"I captained the team for the last two or three games of last season, so I've integrated into it," he said.

Last Saturday, Wormelow claimed a winning draw against Bromyard.

The match was reduced to 30 overs due to the pitch still being wet at the start of play.

Wormelow posted 189-6 thanks to a fine 69 off 65 from overseas star Josh Worsley.

Bromyard did their best to chase down the target, with David Taylor and Edd Oliver scoring 68 and 32 respectively.

However, they could only post 178-8 off their 30 overs.

Bromyard captain Oliver said there a lot of young players at the Flaggoners Green club, but he is confident his team can kick on once they start getting key players back.

"We still haven't been able to pick our strongest side and had a slow start last season," he said.

"We fielded poorly against Wormelow and dropped a couple of catches.

"We were in a good position to win it, but they bowled very well."

Bartestree & Lugwardine, meanwhile, lie second Division Three following a comfortable 100-run win against Astwood Bank.

Tom Strangward continued his fine run of the form with the ball, taking 4-40 as the away side were skittled out for 98.

Bartestree captain Marcus Ashcroft also took three wickets, as well as finishing unbeaten on 28, while Matt Aubrey top scored with 58.
