IT wasn't just England who were involved in a dramatic game on Tuesday – Herefordshire also produced some magic to earn a tie in a remarkable Unicorns Minor Counties Championship Western Division match against Devon at Eastnor.

Former Herefordshire star Chris Woakes may have claimed the plaudits for England in a nail-biting game against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge in the first One Day International thanks to a fantastic 95 not out, but 106 miles away it was Peter Burgoyne who was being patted on the bat.

The off-spinner forced Josh King to drag onto his stumps in the final over to earn an unlikely tie for the county side.

Herefordshire were in all sorts of trouble in their second innings and at one stage were 16-6.

But a fine 50 from David Exall managed to stop the Devon onslaught and Herefordshire were eventually bowled out for 103.

The innings saw a 120-year Minor Counties record broken thanks to the exploits of Jamie Drew.

His figures of 7-15 was the best ever bowling return by a debutant, beating the previous best set by George Mark Hawksworth for Devon against Cornwall in July 1906.

Herefordshire ended the first day on 188-9 and were eventually bowled out for 199.

The second's day play on Monday did not start until 5pm due to rain, but Herefordshire still managed to claim eight wickets to leave Devon reeling on 71-8.

Debutant Alex Wilkinson was the pick of the bowlers having snapped up four wickets.

Devon were bowled out for 97 when the final day's play got underway on Tuesday, but any hope Herefordshire had of putting the game out of sight soon evaporated.

Kieran Smith and Ed Pollock both went for a duck to leave Herefordshire on 0-2, before Chris Whittock also went having not scored any runs.

And when captain Liam Gwynne and Burgoyne departed, Herefordshire were 12-5.

Ian Bullock was then trapped lbw by Drew to leave Herefordshire on 16-6 before Exall and Mo Pardesi finally offered some respite.

Pardesi made 25 before going, with Sutton, Exall and Dan Conway being the final wickets to be snapped up.

Herefordshire claimed three early wickets to leave Devon on 34-3 in their second innings before Burgoyne removed Jack Dart.

But Josh Bess produced some fine strokes and with further runs coming down the order, it was anyone's game.

Bess made 94 before he was the seventh batsmen to depart and it was left to Burgoyne to take the final three wickets and earn a tie.
