COLWALL captain Max Backhouse says they will go into this weekend's derby against Bromyard with a lot of confidence despite being hammered by Droitwich Spa.

A mid-order collapse saw Colwall go from 40-1 to 54-6 which ultimately cost them the game.

To their credit, Colwall did manage to eventually post 164 but it was never going to be enough on a good batting wicket.

Droitwich only needed just over 22 overs to get the necessary runs to record an emphatic eight-wicket win.

"I thought we fought back well to get to 164 but it certainly wasn't enough on this pitch, 250 would have been par score," said Backhouse.

"We've been up and down and it has been a bit of a rollercoaster season.

"We've had some cracking team scores and have got 320 but then a couple of days like this when we've really fallen apart.

"We've probably struggled with a bit of inexperience here and there and have done a lot better in games when we've had some of the older heads available.

"You get into situations where talent only gets you so far and, while we've got some very talented players, it shows sometimes when you've got to close games out.

"But after getting the upper-hand first time round against Bromyard, we'll take a lot of confidence into this one and hopefully we can put a big performance together and put this behind us."

Top scorer for Colwall was Sam Crichard, who recently returned a Dutch T20 tour with the England deaf cricket team.

"We went to Holland to play continental T20 which we did ok, playing France, Denmark and the Netherlands," said Crichard.

"Our main priority at the moment is 20 overs because we're looking at having a Twenty20 World Cup."

Crichard has been involved with the England team for a few years now and toured with them to South Africa.

"I started playing a few years ago at university when I went along to check it out," said Crichard.

"Fortunately, I was good enough to play and went to South Africa in 2013 when I made my breakthrough.

"I've been a bowler and took a few wickets down there and we won every game against the South Africa Deaf team."

Australian leg-spinner Sam Taylor also batted well, scoring 28 runs.

Taylor joined Colwall at the start of the season having come to the UK from Brisbane.

"There's an agent at Bromyard and he matches players overseas with clubs over here and it worked out that Colwall were interested and it seemed like a good place to come and it's been really good," said Taylor.

"There a lot of little differences but it's mostly similar in that it's a good standard and everyone goes out there thinking they can win on any given Saturday.

"I'm staying in Cradley, there's a host family there who are looking after me and they've been really good.

"Herefordshire is a fantastic place, I can't speak highly enough of it."

After choosing to bat after winning the toss, Colwall made 22 before Ben Cooke was the first player to depart.

Tom Coleman then went after being trapped lbw by Mark Swanick before an amazing fall of wickets.

Swanick clean bowled James Abel before wicketkeeper Jay da Costa caught out Ben Wheeler, again off Swanick's delivery. Swanick was at it again when he bowled out Ben Butler before Max Young got out Nick Panniers.

That was the end of the glut of wickets for a time being, but Colwall knew they had a huge task to post a competitive total. Crichard and Backhouse did offer hope but the captain soon went for 11.

Colwall did get to 100 though before Jon Gooch departed and then Crichard for 40 and Michael Gooch for 13.

Opening Droitwich par Martyn Davies and and Max Young then had the luxury of smashing the ball around, with many boundaries scored.

Young made 78 before Taylor trapped him lbw, but by that stage, Droitwich had made 132.

Taylor did get a second wicket when Davies went after being caught by Jon Gooch, but Droitwich soon scored the few runs they needed to complete the job.

"They kept the pressure on but I don't they got us out, there will be a few people disappointed with their shots," said Coleman.

"But you learn and move forward.

"We've already beaten Bromyard heavily this season, so hopefully it'll be a repeat."
