ED Pollock broke Herefordshire County Cricket Club's individual batting record as his unbeaten 227 helped his side to an excellent draw against Shropshire at Eastnor in the Unicorns County Championship.

Pollock's knock, which came off just 255 balls, ensured he beat the previous highest score for Herefordshire by Ron Hughes by just one run.

Hughes' record, which came against Wales, stood for 16 years.

"It's as good an innings as I've I've seen and I've been scoring for over 18 years," said Herefordshire CCC scorer Jim Morris.

"Considering he's only 21, it was a very mature innings and a joy to watch."

It was only Pollock's second game for Herefordshire having played against Cornwall last year.

Pollock, who is the captain of Barnt Green and was named Midlands Cricketer of the Year in January, smashed eight sixes and 22 fours in his knock and helped ensure Herefordshire made a remarkable turnaround when it looked like they were set for a heavy defeat.

After Shropshire posted 367-8 off their 90 overs, Herefordshire found themselves four wickets down for just 50 runs after losing Charlie Lowen, David Exall, Chris Whittock and Joe Crichard. But Pollock and Mo Pardesi put on a fantastic partnership to help start the turnaround, with Pardesi contributing 62 runs before he was trapped lbw by Gurman Randhawa.

But Dan Vernon came in to add some more runs before departing on 40.

However, Pollock was there when it mattered to amazingly put Herefordshire 15 runs ahead of the visitors.

Herefordshire were definitely in the ascendancy when they had Shropshire down at 63-3 when the away side started their second innings, but opener Stephen Leach stood firm to score an excellent 91.

Shropshire were eventually bowled out for 281, with Pardesi (4-51) being the pick of the bowlers.

Chasing 266 to win, Herefordshire made a competent start before Gurman Randhawa bowled captain Exall.

Compared to his previous blistering knock, Pollock was only able to make 20 the second time around before he was caught by Ben Sanderson to leave Herefordshire 91-2.

Opener Lowen made an excellent 66 off 81 when he was next to before Crichard and and Whittock departed.

But with time running out, a draw was always the likely outcome and so it was, with Herefordshire finishing on 191-7 at stumps.
