BROCKHAMPTON Ladies are hoping that more women will take up cricket in the county playing their first league game.

Captained by Kate Bishop, Brockhampton thrashed BristolYMCA by 10 wickets in Gloucester Ladies Division 1.

Anna Robertson, who is a Chance 2 Shine coach and is in charge of a number of teenage girls teams , is vice-captain, with Brockhampton chairman Roy Wargen and county coach Glyn Harrhy also on board.

Bishop, whose mother Julie Taylor is the manager and designed the heir kit, said the team was formed to ensure female players can carry on playing the game.

"Once you finish playing county Under-15 level, there is nowhere to go," she said.

"Roy approached me before the beginning of last season to get the ball rolling and last year I training up at Brockhampton on a Friday evening with a few of the girls. "

Colwall and Ross-on-Wye have previously had women teams, but both decided not to carry on this season.

Brockhampton will play 10 league games this season in the Twenty-20 format.

"I think it's great to just have girls who enjoy playing cricket," added Robertson.

"We've got some Colwall Ladies in the team and a few from Ross.

"A lot of girls play rounders and netball at school, but with cricket, a lot have never played it before.

"We are trying to change women's perspective and that it's not boring."

Wargen said he was delighted with the opening day win.

"They played brilliantly and Kate Bishop was a fantastic captain, she organised them very well," he said.

Bowlers Hannah Larkin and Thea Harrhy set the standard kept Bristol's opening batsmen on their toes.

Wickets then came in quick succession, with Larkin, Alice Stockdale, Cerys Mealand, Lizzie Jeffryes and Megan Jones being among them as they skittled Bristol out for 63.

Jeffryes and Bishop then got the necessary runs to ensure Brockhampton reached their target.
