THERE were a number of close finishes as the Herefordshire cross-country season concluded with the annual championships.

Among notable competitors were Louis Pearson, from Madley Primary School, who pipped Clifford Primary School’s Tom Emmett by just one second in the under-9 boys’ race to win in four minutes five seconds.

The under-11 boys’ race was won by Lucton’s William Wilson, while the equivalent girls race was also a close affair.

Eva Taylor beat her Hereford & County Athletics Club team mate Leah Ellis by 10 seconds.

In the senior men’s category, Tom Grady was 43 seconds ahead of fellow Hereford Couriers member Matt James, while the the veteran men’s race was led by Wye Valley Runners’ Mike Fawcett.

The senior women’s elite race went to Gemma Mallett, of Croft Ambrey, while Wye Valley Runners’ Laura Toottell won the veteran race.
