First win for Hereford Westside in West Midlands Netball League

WESTSIDE gained their first West Midlands League Division Two win of the season when they beat newcomers Sutton Town 43-29.

Westside lined up with GS Helen Hancock, GA Ellie Smith, WA Stacey Barker, C Emily Davies, WD Anna Mulderrig, GD Steph Snowzell and GK Debbie Bowdley but Sutton Town started at a fierce pace, causing Westside to struggle to settle into their own game.

Sutton’s through court game caught Westside off-guard and the score was 8-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Davies dropped back to WD and Mulderrig moved up to C with good attacking drives from Barker allowing the ball to be cleared out of defence and Westside to maintain possession. Smith and Hancock settled well into this new combination and started to put the ball away with ease as Westside led 22-15 at half-time.

After some good phases of play in the third quarter, Westside held their lead at 29-21 and, in the final quarter were now feeling more comfortable.

Bowdley and Snowzell started to communicate well turning over the ball. Davies worked hard to get the ball out of defence and linked well with player-of-the-match Mulderrig in attack as the city side came out comfortable winners.

Fourth-placed Westside now face Willenhall Town on Saturday.
